iPhone Air is picky about customers, iPhone 17 becomes Apple's new star

(Dan Tri) - The iPhone Air may be a physically impressive product, but that doesn't translate to explosive sales.

Apple is said to be cutting production of the iPhone Air (Photo: Anh Le).

According to a new report from The Elec (Korea), Apple is planning to cut iPhone Air production due to lower than expected market demand. Specifically, iPhone Air production may be cut by about 1 million units.

However, this does not mean that overall iPhone demand is declining. On the contrary, the overall picture is extremely positive. Interest in the standard iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro remains strong, far outpacing the ultra-thin Air model.

To meet this demand, Apple is said to be increasing production of the iPhone 17 by 2 million units; the 17 Pro version by 1 million units and the iPhone 17 Pro Max by 4 million units.

It's not surprising that users are turning their backs on the iPhone Air. Although the product is impressively light and thin, the value that the iPhone 17 and 17 Pro bring is much more impressive.

Many users also call this year's iPhone 17 "the best cheap iPhone in years".

The most obvious example is battery life: the iPhone 17 supports up to 30 hours of video playback, a significant jump from 22 hours on the iPhone 16.

The appeal of the iPhone 17 series is so great that the expected delivery time for some configurations is still delayed by 2-3 weeks in major markets such as the US, UK, China and Japan, especially the 512GB version.

Pre-orders in China are also said to have broken records.

So is this a sign of iPhone Air failure?

Maybe Apple didn't intend the iPhone Air to be an explosive hit.

The device occupies a unique and somewhat awkward position in the lineup: It's more expensive than the iPhone 17 but has a less impressive camera setup than the iPhone 17 Pro.

Instead, the iPhone Air is more of a "prelude" to the long-rumored foldable iPhone.

According to Bloomberg, the foldable iPhone — when opened — will look like “two iPhone Airs placed side by side.

It can be seen that the iPhone Air is a clear demonstration of Apple's ability to develop an ultra-thin device without sacrificing processing power or battery life.

Technical improvements from the iPhone Air will likely be applied directly to the foldable iPhone, expected to launch in 2026 or possibly delayed to 2027.
