Why does the iPhone 17 Pro no longer take night portraits?

VHO - iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max were discovered to no longer support night portrait photography, causing discontent among the user community as Apple remained completely silent about the reason for the change.

Despite being promoted as a breakthrough in camera, the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max surprisingly lack a familiar feature: portrait mode in Night conditions. Apple's silent removal of this function without explanation has caused a stir in the user community.

Night Mode is disabled when switching to Portrait mode

The discovery first appeared on Reddit and Apple's support forums, where multiple users reported the strange phenomenon:

When Portrait mode is on, iPhone 17 Pro automatically turns off Night mode.

Conversely, when taking photos with Night, Portrait mode cannot be activated if the light environment is low.

This was later confirmed by Apple's official Support document, which lists the iPhone 12 Pro through iPhone 16 Pro Max as models that support Night Portrait mode — but makes no mention of the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max, suggesting the feature has been removed.

Apple is silent, users have no answer

What makes users unhappy is that Apple did not give any reason for this change. This is even more confusing when:

iPhone 17 Pro features a brand new 48 MP triple camera system

Front camera supports Center Stage

Add simultaneous photo and video capture feature

According to Macworld’s analysis, the problem may lie in the fact that Night mode photos on the iPhone 17 Pro do not capture depth data – an element needed to create the bokeh effect in Portrait mode. Meanwhile, the previous iPhone 16 Pro does not have this limitation, allowing the combination of both modes.

A rare step back for the iPhone Pro series camera

It's rare to remove a feature that's been around for four generations of iPhone Pros, which raises a number of theories:

Technical limits of the new 48 MP sensor

A temporary software bug that can be fixed via an update

Or a permanent design decision that means the feature won't come back

If Apple doesn't come up with a solution soon, this will become a clear weakness of the iPhone 17 Pro — especially for those who regularly take portraits in low-light environments.
