Great opportunities from consumer shifts
In the context of the volatile world economy and the strong increase in online shopping demand in the United States, cross-border e-commerce is opening up a new direction for Vietnamese businesses to expand exports. According to Amazon's North American consumer trends report, 51% of US consumers said they would increase online shopping, while only 10% intended to reduce spending. This is considered a positive signal for Vietnamese businesses wanting to directly access the US market.
Along with the change in shopping behavior, many product groups have recorded significant search growth in the past 6 months. Items with strong demand growth include:
• Travel accessories such as messenger bags, backpacks, and foldable bags increased by 35–51%;
• Household items – personal amenities such as neck pillows, cooling pillowcases, table covers, small air conditioners increased by 20–48%, with common prices ranging from 10–45 USD;
• Outdoor gear – personal tools such as solar lamps, adapters, travel mirrors, and first aid kits increased by 18–39%;
• Cosmetics – personal care including travel care sets, cosmetic bags, nail tools, exfoliating sets increased by 25–85%;
• Fashion – personalized products such as custom-designed shirts, summer jackets, and designer hats increased from 32% to over 140%.
The consumer trend of emphasizing convenience, usability and personalization is considered to be consistent with the advantages of Vietnamese enterprises: flexible production, rapid design improvement and competitive prices.
Great opportunities come with new requirements
Despite the vast growth potential, cross-border e-commerce also poses a series of more stringent requirements on traceability, quality standards, logistics and brand protection. In the context of the US tightening controls to prevent origin fraud and ensure economic security, Vietnamese enterprises need to proactively standardize production processes and fully comply with regulations of e-commerce platforms.
Effectively exploiting digital export platforms
Experts say e-commerce will continue to play an important role as an export channel. To take advantage of it effectively, businesses need to invest systematically in market research, product strategy development, digital marketing, and cross-border logistics capacity. In addition to internal efforts, support from the State and e-commerce platforms – including providing market information, training, and financial support for small and micro businesses – will be the foundation for Vietnamese goods to expand their presence in the United States and other key markets.
In the context of increasingly fierce competition, cross-border e-commerce not only opens up markets but also contributes to raising the position of Vietnamese goods. This is considered a favorable time for businesses to promote digital export strategies and grasp new consumer trends to break through on global platforms.
