Great opportunities arising from consumer shifts.
Amidst a volatile global economy and a surge in online shopping demand in the United States, cross-border e-commerce is opening up new avenues for Vietnamese businesses to expand their exports. According to Amazon's North American consumer trends report, 51% of US consumers said they would increase online purchases, while only 10% intended to reduce spending. This is seen as a positive sign for Vietnamese businesses seeking direct access to the US market.
Along with changing shopping behavior, many product categories have seen significant search growth in the last 6 months. Items with strong demand include:
• Travel accessories such as tote bags, backpacks, and foldable bags increased by 35–51%;
• Household items and personal accessories such as neck pillows, cooling pillowcases, tablecloths, and small air conditioners increased by 20–48%, with common prices ranging from $10–45.
• Outdoor equipment – personal tools such as solar lights, adapters, travel mirrors, first-aid kits increased by 18–39%;
• Cosmetics and personal care products, including travel care sets, cosmetic bags, nail tools, and exfoliating sets, increased by 25–85%;
• Fashion – personalized products such as custom-designed shirts, summer jackets, and designer hats increased from 32% to over 140%.
Consumer trends that prioritize convenience, usability, and personalization are considered suitable for Vietnamese businesses' strengths: flexible production, rapid design innovation, and competitive pricing.
Great opportunities come with new demands.
Despite its vast growth potential, cross-border e-commerce also places increasingly stringent demands on traceability, quality standards, logistics, and brand protection. In the context of the US tightening controls to prevent origin fraud and ensure economic security, Vietnamese businesses need to proactively standardize their production processes and fully comply with the regulations of e-commerce platforms.
Effectively leverage the digital export platform.
Experts predict that e-commerce will continue to play a crucial role as an export channel. To effectively leverage this, businesses need to invest systematically in market research, product strategy development, digital marketing, and cross-border logistics capabilities. Besides internal efforts, support from the government and e-commerce platforms – including providing market information, training, and financial assistance for small and micro-enterprises – will be fundamental in helping Vietnamese goods expand their presence in the United States and other key markets.
In the context of increasingly fierce competition, cross-border e-commerce not only opens up market opportunities but also contributes to elevating the position of Vietnamese goods. This is considered a favorable time for businesses to strengthen their digital export strategies and seize new consumer trends to break through on global platforms.
