With hundreds of years of history, Hoi An was recognized by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage in 1999 thanks to its outstanding values in architecture, culture, landscape and community lifestyle. This is an important milestone in the work of preserving and promoting national cultural values.

In particular, after the Prime Minister approved the overall investment plan for the conservation, restoration and promotion of the value of Hoi An ancient town associated with the development of Hoi An and tourism in the 2012-2025 period, the conservation work has entered a new phase, more systematic and in-depth, closely linking heritage conservation with socio -economic development and sustainable tourism.

Technical infrastructure, landscape and environment have also been upgraded and improved, raising awareness and the role of the local community in heritage conservation.

Ms. Thi affirmed: "Hoi An ancient town continues to be one of the top tourist destinations in Vietnam and the world, and is also a successful model of heritage conservation associated with sustainable development."

This success was achieved thanks to the strong direction of the Government, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the support of central ministries and branches, and the support of UNESCO and the international community.

Especially the dedication, responsibility and love for heritage of generations of leaders and people of Hoi An, Quang Nam province in the past and Da Nang city today.

At the conference, Mr. Hoang Dao Cuong, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, assessed that the planning is an important legal basis in the journey of preserving and promoting the heritage value of the ancient town of Hoi An, contributing to preserving and promoting the heritage value in harmony with tourism development.

“Hoi An has become a model for Vietnam and the region in heritage conservation in contemporary life. In the new context with the operation of two-level local government and the development orientation of Da Nang, many opportunities have opened up to improve conservation work.

However, it is still necessary to firmly adhere to the principle of taking cultural heritage as the center, not trading heritage for economic goals," the Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism emphasized.

Leaders of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism also asked Da Nang city to study and develop a new master plan for the next phase, inheriting the achievements of more than 20 years since UNESCO recognized the ancient town of Hoi An as a World Cultural Heritage.

The new planning needs to follow the ecological - cultural - tourism development axis, update new trends and recommendations of UNESCO, regulations of the Law on Cultural Heritage, towards sustainable, modern and adaptive development in the digital age.
