"Fly lightly to Hanoi": Connecting the autumnal beauty of the capital with a green message, together with Vietnam Airlines.

On October 20, 2025, Vietnam Airlines, in coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment and the Vietnam Environmentally Friendly Product Manufacturers Association (EPMA), officially launched the "Fly Lightly to Hanoi" campaign on flight VN248 from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi.

This is a continuation of the successful "Fly Light to Con Dao" campaign in 2024, which strongly promoted a green lifestyle and attracted thousands of passengers and residents to participate.

Vietnam Airlines is promoting online check-in to reduce the use of paper cards and tags, and will discontinue the use of paper invitation cards for lounge access for economy class passengers.

The "Fly Light with Vietnam Airlines" campaign has been upgraded to a nationwide campaign over five years (2025-2030), aiming for long-term goals in the sustainable development journey of Vietnam's national airline. While the 2024 campaign, which started in Con Dao, conveyed the message of preserving the marine ecosystem, this year, "Fly Light to Hanoi " continues to spread the spirit of environmental protection while promoting the beauty of the capital city in its gentle autumn season.

The campaign kicked off with a flight carrying the message "Fly lightly to Hanoi." This was a sustainable flight in which Vietnam Airlines implemented a comprehensive range of green solutions across all operational stages.

At the airport, Vietnam Airlines is promoting online check-in to reduce the use of paper cards and tags, and has discontinued the use of paper invitation cards for lounge access for economy class passengers. For cargo, the airline is using lightweight containers (ULDs) and encouraging passengers to reduce baggage weight to minimize weight, save fuel, and contribute to a greener travel experience.

On flights, Vietnam Airlines replaces disposable styrofoam ice containers with reusable materials, sorts waste on board, uses biodegradable blanket bags, and encourages passengers to bring their own cups. The airline controls the rate of leftover meals through consumption data analysis, adjusts reasonable portion sizes, and implements a pre-ordering system, contributing to reducing food waste and plastic waste.

Passengers will be introduced to and encouraged to take small but practical actions such as reducing luggage weight, checking in online, and bringing their own water bottles or cups. Actual data shows that nearly 80% of passengers on the "Lightweight Flight to Hanoi" flight checked in online and used full biometric verification during check-in. By reducing aircraft weight, the flight will consume less fuel, reduce CO2 emissions, and lessen its environmental impact.

At the same time, VNA is implementing various aircraft technical solutions such as aircraft drying, regular engine cleaning, and aircraft door alignment to reduce fuel consumption.

Also on the light flight to Hanoi, nearly 250 passengers will witness the ceremony of handing over the partnership symbol of the "Fly Light with Vietnam Airlines" campaign between Vietnam Airlines and the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment and the EPMA Association. This ceremony marks a close cooperation, a joint commitment to reduce emissions, protect the environment, and spread the message of green living in the community.

In parallel with its on-flight activities, Vietnam Airlines also implemented a plastic collection program at a series of cultural and tourism events in Hanoi as part of the "Touch Hanoi" campaign, a collaboration between VNA and the Hanoi People's Committee. The airline's plastic collection stations were set up in areas with high concentrations of people. The collected plastic products were recycled into useful items and then donated to organizations, schools, and underprivileged children.

In particular, "Fly Light to Hanoi" is one of the flagship activities that Vietnam Airlines plans to register for "The Aviation Challenge 2025" organized by SkyTeam, which aims to honor green initiatives and efforts to reduce emissions in the global aviation industry. Participating in this international event affirms Vietnam Airlines' strong commitment to pioneering a sustainable development strategy, aiming for net zero emissions by 2050.
