Try trekking through the forest to conquer the fairy-tale-like Sa Mu peak

Sa Mu is one of the mountains suitable for beginners to try trekking.

Sa Mu is one of the most pristine mountain peaks in the Northwest region, located in Xim Vang commune, Bac Yen district, Son La province, in the Ta Xua special-use forest - the intersection between Son La and Lao Cai .

With an altitude of nearly 3,000m above sea level, Sa Mu peak is considered an emerging but attractive trekking spot for those who love exploring wild nature.

Mr. Dang Van Tuong (30 years old, Hanoi ) had a memorable 2-day-1-night trip to Sa Mu: "I learned about Sa Mu and the Sa Mu trekking tour through a local in Xim Vang who posted on social media. After finding out more information, I decided to come here because the scenery is so beautiful."

The route to conquer Sa Mu starts from the center of Xim Vang commune, about 30km from Bac Yen town. The trekking journey lasts about 13km from the foot of the mountain to the top, suitable for people with average physical strength.

“Along the way is a majestic primeval forest landscape, rich vegetation including bamboo, maple, rhododendron and countless ancient trees covered with moss. The air in the forest is cool, pure and quiet, giving the feeling of returning to the purest nature,” said Mr. Tuong.

The trekker said the most difficult thing was having to walk a lot, requiring physical strength and endurance. This was a big challenge for office workers like him. In addition, the terrain in this area was steep and slippery when it rained, requiring climbers to have basic survival skills in nature.

“When trekking Sa Mu, everyone must have warm clothes, waterproof trekking shoes, flashlights and basic protective gear. I rate the difficulty of the route at 6/10, just enough to be challenging but not too harsh,” Mr. Tuong shared.

In addition, tourists need to check the address, route, and porter information in advance to avoid the worst cases such as getting lost, being scammed online, etc. The total cost for Mr. Truong's trip was 1.5 million VND.

The male tourist commented that Sa Mu is a beautiful forest, not too difficult for those new to trekking. However, before going, tourists should still exercise and prepare personal belongings carefully.

“Currently, Sa Mu trekking tours are mainly organized by local people in Xim Vang, including porters, meals, huts in the forest and homestays in the village. Tourism services and infrastructure are not yet developed much, so preserving the forest environment and respecting the local space is necessary for the Sa Mu journey to retain the original beauty of the Northwest mountains and forests,” said the male trekker.
