Trekking tourism - Valuable experiences and safety notes

Pu Luong trekking routes attract tourists.

When it comes to trekking in Thanh Hoa, many people often think of attractive tourist routes such as: Pu Luong peak - Con Soi island, Pu Hu peak, Pu Xeo peak - 7-storey waterfall - Lung Nhai Oath historical site... Among them, Pu Luong route is loved by many tourists, where there are long terraced fields, rustic stilt houses, the sound of flowing streams creating the music of the mountains and forests. The trekking journey here will take visitors through small roads along the mountainside, through corn fields, rice fields, meet indigenous people and experience the typical mountain life. The trekking route in the West of Thanh Hoa also takes visitors to dense primeval forests, majestic waterfalls and rich ecosystems, creating challenges but also full of attraction for those who love nature.

The special thing about trekking in Thanh Hoa is not only a physical journey but also a cultural excursion. Each step brings visitors closer to the local life, enjoying rustic cuisine such as sticky rice, grilled stream fish, wild bamboo shoot soup; participating in traditional festivals or immersing themselves in the Thai khap and khoa luong music. It is the combination of majestic nature and unique culture that creates its own value, making trekking in Thanh Hoa a valuable experience, not only for domestic tourists but also attractive to international tourists.

However, for a trekking journey to be a complete experience, safety is always the top priority. Trekking routes, although beautiful and interesting, are often associated with rugged terrain, erratic weather and unexpected risks. Recently, in some localities in the country, there have been many cases of tourists having accidents due to subjectivity, lack of preparation or not anticipating potential dangers. Mr. Ngan Anh Tuan, a long-time tour guide in the Pu Luong area, shared: “Trekking is a journey that is both attractive and potentially challenging. Not everyone can go on their own without preparation. I have met some tourists wearing inappropriate shoes, lacking drinking water or necessary items, and had to give up halfway through. Therefore, it is necessary to carefully study the travel schedule, prepare well physically and go trekking with someone experienced to ensure safety.”

To have a safe trip, visitors need to learn about the terrain and weather in advance, prepare suitable equipment such as trekking shoes, trekking poles, raincoats, flashlights, insect repellent, as well as enough food and water. Traveling in groups, with a local guide or a professional guide is also an important factor to avoid getting lost or encountering risks. In addition, environmental awareness is also a note that cannot be ignored. Leaving garbage on the journey not only spoils the landscape but also affects the ecosystem. Therefore, the principle of "Bring nothing back but pictures, leave nothing but footprints" is increasingly encouraged in trekking trips in Thanh Hoa .

From another perspective, Ms. Nguyen Thu Trang, a tourist from Hanoi who participated in trekking in Pu Luong, shared her feelings: “What impressed me most was not only the majestic natural landscape but also the feeling of touching the peaceful, pristine atmosphere. Each route brought surprises, from a waterfall hidden in the deep forest to the warm smiles of the local people. However, the time my group and I participated, the weather was rainy and the slippery roads made it very difficult to move, and the finish time was not as planned. That was when I realized how important the preparation and experience of the tour guide were. Without them, we might have gotten into trouble when it got dark. That experience helped me realize that trekking is not just about walking to see the scenery, but also a journey that requires respect for nature and a sense of safety.”

These shares show that trekking in Thanh Hoa not only brings spiritual values but also requires serious preparation. This is not only a temporary tourism trend but also opens up opportunities for sustainable development for local tourism. Speaking at the consultation seminar to complete the product "Thanh Hoa Tourism - Four Seasons of Fragrance" (August 22, 2025), Chairman of the Vietnam Green Tourism Association Phung Quang Thang said: "As trekking tourism develops, local people have more livelihoods from homestay services, cuisine, and tour guides. First of all, ensuring the safety of tourists needs to be a top priority, so departments, branches, and localities need to develop specific regulations and instructions on safety, and at the same time train a team of professional tour guides, raise community awareness about preserving landscapes and local culture, and create a safe and friendly tourism environment."

Trekking in Thanh Hoa is a journey for each person to challenge themselves, listen to the call of nature and find balance in modern life. But above all, it is also a journey of connection, when people and nature blend together, leaving unforgettable memories in the hearts of each visitor. And only when accompanied by careful preparation, with a sense of safety and responsibility, will that experience be truly complete and worthwhile.
