Hundreds of trekkers stranded by a snowstorm near the eastern slope of Mount Everest in Tibet have been guided to safety by rescuers, Chinese media reported on October 5, amid unusually heavy snow and rain in the Himalayas.
According to China Central Television (CCTV), as of October 5, 350 trekkers had reached Qudang town. Rescuers had also established contact with the remaining 200 people.
Hundreds of visitors have flocked to the remote Karma Valley, which leads to the Kangshung Face on the east side of Mount Everest (Kangshung is one of the three main slopes of Mount Everest), over the past week during China's eight-day National Day holiday.
Heavy snowfall from October 3 in Karma valley at an average altitude of 4,200m.
"It rained and snowed continuously for days, we couldn't even see Mount Everest," recalled Eric Wen, who survived the blizzard.
On October 4, Wen's group decided to turn back from their fifth and final campsite due to concerns about prolonged snowfall.
"Our group only had a few tents. More than 10 people crammed into one big tent and it was almost impossible to sleep," he said.
Three people in Wen's group suffered from hypothermia, when the ambient temperature drops below freezing, despite being fully clothed.
Despite this, his expedition was largely unscathed, including several guides and yak herders – the “vehicles” used to transport equipment and supplies.

"It's wet and cold on the mountain, hypothermia is a real risk. The weather this year is unusual. The guide said he had never encountered such weather in October. It all happened so suddenly," Chen Geshuang, a member of the 18-person trekking group that reached Qudang, told Reuters.
Chen and her group descended the mountain on October 5 and were welcomed by villagers after a terrifying night of heavy snowfall and lightning. Chen was given tea and warmed by the villagers, unable to hold back her tears.
Hundreds of locals and rescuers have been deployed to clear snow blocking access to the area where nearly 1,000 people are trapped.
Those still trapped on the mountain will arrive at Qudang town in stages, under the guidance and support of local government rescue forces.
