When Van Lam makes a mistake

Goalkeeper Dang Van Lam played unreliably in the first leg between Vietnam and Nepal, and this could create opportunities for the two young goalkeepers Tran Trung Kien and Nguyen Van Viet.

Dang Van Lam made a mistake in the 17th-minute goal conceded a few days ago, when he failed to command the defense properly in a situation involving a high ball, creating space for the Nepalese player to head in the equalizer. Former striker Dang Phuong Nam commented: "Throughout the match, Lam didn't face much pressure but was quite clumsy with ball control and initiating attacks with his feet in his own half." Not to mention, at the beginning of the second half, he made another unsafe move, rushing out of the penalty area, almost allowing a long pass into the Vietnamese team's half to result in a goal for the opponent.

These mistakes could cost Van Lam points, and it's possible that in the return match on October 14th, coach Kim Sang-sik will consider giving an opportunity to Nguyen Van Viet or Tran Trung Kien. Both of these young goalkeepers are currently in good form in the domestic league.

If not now, then when?

In particular, Trung Kien played exceptionally well and made a significant contribution to helping the Vietnam U23 team win the Southeast Asian U23 Championship in July, and win all three qualifying matches for the Asian U23 Championship in early September to secure a place in the finals. The HAGL goalkeeper needs matches at the national team level to further develop his skills. If given the opportunity to compete on a major stage, he will further hone his composure and confidence, preparing him for other important Vietnamese football tournaments in the coming months, such as the SEA Games 33 at the end of December this year and the Asian U23 Championship early next year.

In terms of physique, Trung Kien is 1.91m tall. He has sharp reflexes, is good at catching high balls, controls the penalty area, and plays the ball well with his feet, initiating attacks from his own half of the field quite effectively. In fact, he handles this aspect even more smoothly than his senior teammate Dang Van Lam. Trung Kien's current weakness is perhaps only his lack of experience. If the match against a not-so-strong opponent like Nepal isn't used to further hone Trung Kien's battlefield skills, Coach Kim might not have a better opportunity.

As for goalkeeper Van Viet, at 1.81m tall, his physique is somewhat less impressive than his two colleagues in the Vietnamese national team. However, if we consider other factors such as agility, quickness, good positioning, and situational awareness, he is in no way inferior to Van Lam and Trung Kien.

In today's second leg match on October 14th, it wouldn't be surprising if Coach Kim fielded one of the two young goalkeepers. Why not?
