Restoring production in coded growing areas

Việt NamViệt Nam23/12/2024

The registration of growing area codes is increasingly attracting the attention of many farmers in the province. Therefore, along with restoring production after the storm, many households actively apply regulations to maintain and expand the production area assigned with area codes.

The granting of growing area codes for production areas and packaging facilities in the province has been implemented since 2019, when the whole province had 14 growing areas and 5 packaging facilities for longan, lychee, dragon fruit... granted codes by China qualified to export to this market, including 7 lychee growing areas in Dong Trieu City and Uong Bi City; 4 dragon fruit growing areas in Mong Cai City and Uong Bi City;   3 longan growing areas in Dong Trieu city.   From the end of 2019 to the end of 2022, the issuance of growing area codes in the province has almost "stalled". Besides the reason that many growing areas do not meet the area criteria, it is mainly because people and businesses are still indifferent and have not changed their thinking in production to be granted growing area codes. Meanwhile, some countries such as the United States, Australia, and China require Vietnamese fruits to have growing area codes before being allowed to be exported to these countries. In particular, according to Chinese regulations, fresh fruits imported into this country must have traceability information and require the competent authority of the exporting country to provide information on growing area codes and fresh fruit packaging facilities to the competent authority of the Chinese side.

Faced with the urgent need to issue codes for growing areas, the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has accompanied and supported, guided people, cooperatives, and businesses to promote the establishment and development of codes for growing areas and packaging facilities for a number of key crops and products of the province. Understanding the benefits of issuing codes, not having to pay registration fees but only needing to meet the criteria on area, food safety, pest control, etc., the area of growing areas granted codes across the province has increased rapidly.

To date, the province has issued 66 growing area codes with a total area of over 1,532 hectares (including 46 growing area codes for export and 20 growing area codes for domestic consumption). The growing area codes are all updated on the growing data software of the Department of Crop Production and the Department of Plant Protection (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development). However, due to the impact of the recent storm No. 3, most of the facilities suffered great damage. In parallel with restoring production and meeting the market demand at the end of the year, people have also strictly followed the production regulations of the facilities that have been issued growing area codes.

Typically, households growing custard apples in Viet Dan commune (Dong Trieu city), with areas that were broken down by storms, have planted new varieties to rejuvenate old custard apple gardens. Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuan (Tan Thanh village, Viet Dan commune, Dong Trieu city) shared: The care and renovation of the custard apple garden continues to be carried out by the family in accordance with the VietGAP process with farming measures according to the process, ensuring food hygiene and safety and ensuring the environment. All impacts on the plants such as pruning, care, fertilization, spraying... are fully and clearly recorded.

The Phalaenopsis orchid farm (Le Loi commune, Ha Long city) is actively restoring production to meet the year-end market.

At the 2,500m2 orchid greenhouse of Truong Thanh Phalaenopsis Orchid Farm (Le Loi Commune, Ha Long City), production recovery has also been actively implemented. Mr. Nguyen Danh Thuyen (owner of Truong Thanh Phalaenopsis Orchid Farm, Le Loi Commune, Ha Long City), said: In order to maintain the farm's growing area code, the farm has just restored nearly 2,000m2 of the greenhouse damaged by the storm to grow over 500,000 orchids to serve the year-end market, strictly following the instructions of the authorities to ensure strict quality standards are met.

Up to now, basically all concentrated production areas and coded growing areas have returned to stable operation. To compensate for the reduced output, households have also increased their growing areas.

Determining that the granting of codes to agricultural production areas is an inevitable requirement for agriculture to integrate into the digital economy, affirming quality and value in the domestic consumption market and being a "passport" to foreign markets, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development continues to strengthen quality monitoring of coded growing areas; review typical crop production models on key products of the province and locality to maintain, develop and replicate as a basis for digital transformation; deploy guidelines for criteria for tracing the origin of key crop products, guide localities to implement regulations, dossier components, steps for granting codes for growing areas and packaging facilities in accordance with regulations. At the same time, the Department will also continue to coordinate with OTAS GLOBAL Joint Stock Company to maintain standardization of growing area data using the OTAS method for growing areas of early-ripening lychee, cinnamon, star anise, and guava. All data of growing areas is standardized and updated to the OTAS system using cloud computing technology to serve traceability and information authentication 24/7, to meet export standards.
