On July 28, the Investigation Police Department of Ben Tre province announced that it had issued decisions to initiate criminal proceedings, indict the suspect, and prohibit Tran Tuan Cuong (25 years old, residing in Tan Xuan commune, Ba Tri district, Ben Tre province) from leaving his place of residence, in order to investigate his violation of regulations on resource exploitation.
Tran Tuan Cuong listened as the decisions to initiate criminal proceedings and the order prohibiting him from leaving his place of residence were read aloud.
According to the case file, at approximately 2:00 AM on April 23rd, a task force from the Economic Police Department of Ben Tre Provincial Police was patrolling the Co Chien River. Upon reaching the section within the waterway of Cho Lach District, Ben Tre (bordering Vinh Long Province), the task force caught Tran Tuan Cuong red-handed operating a wooden boat illegally extracting sand from the riverbed, with a total volume of 7.2 cubic meters.
Previously, Cuong was fined over 53 million VND by the People's Committee of Giong Trom District (Ben Tre province) for illegal river sand mining, but he has not yet paid the fine.
Currently, the Investigation Police Department of Ben Tre province is continuing to consolidate the case file to prosecute Tran Tuan Cuong for violating regulations on resource exploitation.
