Former US President Donald Trump proposed imposing a tax of more than 60% on Chinese goods. (Source: Reuters) |
The information was given in an interview broadcast on February 4 on Fox 's Sunday Morning Futures program.
According to Mr. Trump, besides China, he plans to impose a general tax of 10% on all goods imported into the US - although this policy proposal has received much criticism because of the effects on consumers.
US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Harley opposed Mr. Trump's proposal.
The proposal would cost households an additional $2,600 a year, according to the National Taxpayers Union, according to Harley.
The sentiment resonates with investor concerns that another trade war with Beijing would disrupt markets again.
Ms Harley is Mr Trump's only remaining rival in the Republican race.
Starting in 2018, Mr. Trump initiated a wave of tariffs worth $250 billion on Chinese goods. China then responded with a series of tariffs on American goods.
The trade war has dragged on for years and disrupted global trade dynamics.
