Speaking at the congress, Associate Professor Le Van Truyen, former Deputy Minister of Health and Head of the Steering Committee for the establishment of the Vietnam Hospital Pharmacists Association, noted that the situation of buying and selling drugs without prescriptions, patients self-medicating, and antibiotic abuse has been observed for many years.

Furthermore, antibiotic resistance and hospital-acquired infections, the overuse of unnecessary medications, and the rate of medical errors related to prescribing, prescribing, and using medications remain problems in treatment facilities and in the habits and behaviors of the population regarding medication use.

This reality necessitates a more vigorous and effective implementation of hospital pharmacy and clinical pharmacy activities in Vietnam in the coming period.

Congratulating the success of the congress, Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Xuan Tuyen suggested that the Vietnam Hospital Pharmacists Association should participate in the development and critique of policies, laws, and professional regulations; organize information and communication activities to disseminate policies, laws, and professional regulations to its members; and develop and issue professional guidelines and pharmaceutical technical procedures as a basis for the safe, rational, and effective supply and use of medicines in healthcare facilities.

Mr. Cao Hung Thai stated that the Vietnam Hospital Pharmacists Association has signed cooperation agreements with universities and hospitals to implement professional training activities and scientific seminars to improve the effectiveness of safe and rational drug use; conduct scientific research to provide evidence and develop models for good pharmacy management, drug supply and use management, and clinical pharmacy models in treatment facilities; and research the application of technology and AI in drug management. In particular, they will participate in implementing activities to enhance safe and rational drug use and reduce the risks of drug resistance in treatment.

According to a report published in 2022 at a provincial hospital, the rate of inappropriate initial antibiotic regimens was 35.8%, and the majority of patients had their treatment regimens changed after antibiotic susceptibility testing results (64.9%) due to lack of improvement or worsening of their condition.
