The agenda of the 28th Asia Future Conference, held in Tokyo, Japan, focused on discussing Asia's vision, role, and cooperation direction in the context of a complex and volatile global situation. At the conference, many opinions suggested that Asia is playing an increasingly important role in building and consolidating a peaceful and prosperous global environment.
Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang delivered a speech at the 28th Asia Future Conference.
First held in 1995, the Asia Future Conference has consistently been one of the most important global events. Taking place over two days, May 25th and 26th, the 2023 conference, themed “Elevating Asia’s Strength in Addressing Global Challenges,” attracted over 600 delegates from around the world, including numerous heads of state and national leaders.
The event took place against the backdrop of a political , economic, and non-traditional security situation that continued to be complex and unpredictable, profoundly impacting the security and development environment of countries. The theme of this conference was considered highly timely and significant, especially given that Asia, home to 60% of the global population and currently the world's largest economy, with ASEAN being the fifth largest, has recently experienced consistent and stable growth.
At the conference, sessions reviewed and discussed ways to address pressing issues such as the US-China rivalry, global security, climate change, and inflation. Delegates also discussed the vision, role, and direction of Asian cooperation in addressing global issues in a multipolar world, focusing on areas such as economic recovery and development, green transition, climate change, narrowing the development gap, and social inequality.
Speaking at the conference, Thai Deputy Prime Minister Don Pramudwinai emphasized that, in order to respond to the challenges of an increasingly complex world, Asia needs unity and cooperation to promote peace and prosperity in the region. Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe also noted that, with its diverse nature, Asia will be a contributing factor to economic growth and will play an increasingly important role in addressing global issues.
Sharing Vietnam's perspective, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang put forward five important proposals for the development process in Asia; emphasizing that countries need to share and realize a vision of building a rules-based international system; strongly promote joint efforts and actions in addressing global challenges; further enhance people-to-people exchanges, connect the younger generation, and promote cooperation in the fields of culture, education, tourism, etc. Agreeing that ensuring the creation and consolidation of a peaceful and stable environment is a prerequisite for development in Asia and the world, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang affirmed that Vietnam attaches importance to promoting relations with its partners.
Addressing the US-China rivalry, Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong highlighted ASEAN's central role in resolving related challenges. He noted that most ASEAN member states have "deep historical and substantive ties" with both economies, while other major powers such as Japan also have vested interests. Many at the conference supported the approach Asian nations are maintaining: restraint and neutrality in the great power competition.
With frank and in-depth exchanges, the 28th Asia Future Conference was effective, further affirming its role as a forum for open discussion on regional issues, thereby continuously enhancing Asia's standing.
