Artist Kim Ngan ( Can Tho City) won second prize at the National Cai Luong Actor Talent Competition - 2026.

A notable aspect of this year's competition is its rather strict regulations. According to the rules, contestants must be between 18 and 40 years old, have graduated from high school, and have received at least intermediate-level training in Cai Luong (Vietnamese traditional opera) acting, or have won awards at professional theater festivals organized by the Vietnam Association of Theater Artists for Cai Luong artists. Furthermore, contestants must have worked at professional art organizations for a minimum of 24 months. For art organizations, the requirement is continuous operation for at least 36 months, with new productions staged annually and maintaining the required number of performances.

These regulations show that the competition is no longer just about finding a good singer, but is aiming to build a team of professional Cai Luong artists with high qualifications and a solid professional foundation. In the context of Cai Luong theater integrating into the digital age, requirements regarding education, expertise, and the professional working environment are understandable.

Today's Cai Luong actors not only need to sing well and act skillfully, but also need knowledge and critical thinking to create characters with depth, and the ability to appreciate literature, history, culture, and social psychology to enrich their roles. This is not a strict regulation, but a new standard for the development of Cai Luong art in this new era.

Expectations for young Cai Luong (Vietnamese traditional opera) artists today also extend to their singing and acting skills. Audiences appreciate Cai Luong through genuine emotions, psychological depth, and creativity in each artist's performance. Therefore, the ability to sing and act harmoniously becomes a crucial requirement. A beautiful voice remains the foundation of a Cai Luong artist, but singing must be linked to acting and the character. Artists also need diversity in roles and in their performance styles to always create fresh perspectives.

This year's competition also has strict regulations for art units sending contestants, aiming to build a genuine and professional art environment and limit the practice of "using the name" of an organization to participate in the competition. In the past, there were instances of freelance artists or those not affiliated with any theater troupe "requesting" or "borrowing" the name of an organization to qualify for the competition. This regulation aims to establish a sense of responsibility between artists and art units in practicing and preserving their craft.

With the rapid development of modern forms of entertainment, Cai Luong (Vietnamese traditional opera) faces many challenges. Young audiences have more choices and different approaches to the art form. Young Cai Luong artists who want to win over audiences must proactively innovate and improve themselves. This may make their path to Cai Luong somewhat challenging, but it leads to success. And, figures like Le Hoang Nghi and Trong Nhan, through this competition, have demonstrated this.
