Live life to the fullest

According to documents left by the late writer and journalist Tran Mai Hanh, journalist and poet Nguyen Trong Dinh was a reporter for Nhan Dan Newspaper. Trong Dinh died in the early morning of August 26, 1968, when a firecracker exploded nearby, sharp shrapnel pierced his backpack and went straight into his heart. Blood from his heart flowed along the bullet path, soaking his entire backpack.

In that backpack, there were handwritings and manuscripts, the remaining sketch of the poem “To You” soaked in the poet’s blood. Not a single word was not stained with blood. It was impossible to decipher, not even a single line of the poem.

The photo of him and his lover had a hole in Dinh's left chest, with blood stains there. The last lines in the diary were written in hasty, scribbled handwriting: "... My dear! I have gone down to the plains and to the front. Having devoted myself to the revolution, I have also clearly understood all the necessary things that I must do in this fierce battle. I hope that my Kim will always be happy on the road of life. And always pure and beautiful like the love between us (....) even if I sacrifice, please consider it an honor and pride. Because your beloved has lived fully with the responsibility of a child of the Party. Kisses. I am going to the front!"

His comrades hastily buried him by the La Tho River in Ba Dua hamlet. Before going to the South, he left behind a poem: If I have to go back/ I will go back this way/ Even though that road leads to death.

"The road to the front is so much fun"

In April 1968, female writer and martyr Duong Thi Xuan Quy left her 16-month-old daughter with her grandmother to go to the battlefield in the South, one year after her husband, poet Bui Minh Quoc, went to the battlefield.

Falling at the youthful age of 28, Duong Thi Xuan Quy left behind a number of major works such as “Back to the Village” (first short story - 1960), “Standing Place” (short story collection - 1968), “Wild Flowers”. Among her mementos, there are many diary pages telling about the loyalty and indomitable spirit of the steadfast female journalist, who rushed into the fire and bullets, recording the most touching stories of wartime.

Letter dated March 2, 1969, sent to Mr. Tien (Tran Tien - Chu Cam Phong): “I went to Xuyen Hoa in time. On the afternoon of February 21, 1969, I arrived in Xuyen Hoa after almost dying from a rocket attack by a patrol ship… I decided not to go to Xuyen Phu. But we were fighting An Hoa like that while I was nearby, it would be unreasonable not to go. I decided to go up to Xuyen Phu… Xuyen Phu - Xuyen Hoa were both good at mines and fighting the Americans. I wanted to write a memoir about Xuyen Phu, Xuyen Hoa, this early spring offensive, and a memoir about Xuyen Chau...”.

On the night of March 3, 1969, from a secret bunker in the eastern Duy Xuyen region, in a letter to writer Chu Cam Phong, she wrote: “I arrived at H2/K532 this morning. The boat ride was a bit difficult. The enemy had just ambushed and shot dead one of my comrades the day before yesterday and yesterday they shot and wounded two of our comrades while crossing the road… Remember to send me a letter right away, Mr. Tien.”

But then just a few days later, on the night of March 8, 1969, Duong Thi Xuan Quy heroically sacrificed herself in Thi Thai village, Xuyen Tan commune (now Duy Thanh), Duy Xuyen district, during a fierce sweep.

Letter to teammates

Writer Chu Cam Phong's real name is Tran Tien. In 1964, after graduating from university with an excellent degree, he became a reporter for the Vietnam News Agency at the Quang Da front during the years of fighting against the Americans to save the country. He sacrificed his life, leaving behind a huge legacy, fiery diary pages and letters to his comrades and loved ones!

On November 9, 1968, in a letter from Chu Cam Phong to Mr. Cuoc and Ms. Tam (doctor): “Although I am thinner and weaker than before, I still work very hard, very aggressively and still have ambitions, still dream of one day returning to Da Nang, dream of one day returning to the streets of Hanoi with two rows of tall trees and streets full of fallen yellow dracontomelon leaves... I can still stay up all night, without sleeping for a second, to write a short story, a memoir or an article. And soon I will follow the army units to write about new attacks in Quang Nam - Da Nang”.

In a letter to his lover Huynh Thi Phuong Lien on April 1, 1971: “…I will bring your gentle, tender, sweet and passionate image to the battlefield along with the burning memories in my heart. I will go far, to the right place, and will live a worthy life. I never want us to be ordinary people, our love to be narrow... When we love each other, we will fight tirelessly, for the rest of our lives. The more we love each other, the more we will look at the enemies, face them and fight bravely”.

Exactly 1 month later, he fought until his last breath and sacrificed himself by the Thu Bon River...
