Favorable weather conditions and the reappearance of many schools of fish are raising hopes for a bountiful fishing season, giving fishermen more motivation to stay at sea.

At Phu Hai fishing port in Phu Thuy ward, from early morning, many fishing boats were busy docking, unloading seafood, refueling, and stocking up on ice in preparation for the next fishing trips. Seafood such as tuna, mackerel, scad, herring, squid, and shrimp were purchased by traders right at the port for distribution to many locations inside and outside the province.

The southern fishing season typically lasts from April to September of the lunar calendar each year and is the most important time for the local fishing industry. According to local fishermen, the main fishing grounds are currently concentrated mainly in the coastal and offshore areas of the province, the southern part of the Phu Quy Special Economic Zone, Con Son, the Truong Sa archipelago, and the DK1 platform…

Following the recent early-season rains, abundant seafood has begun to appear in traditional fishing grounds. Taking advantage of the favorable weather, many fishing vessels are continuously venturing out to sea to fish. Many are determined to stay at sea for extended periods. After catching the seafood, it is sold to purchasing units for distribution and consumption.

Fisherman Trinh Ngoc Tung, from Phu Thuy ward, said that in the early months of the year, the weather was unpredictable, coupled with high fuel costs, so fishing activities were at a reduced level. However, from mid-March of the lunar calendar until now, the weather has been stable, with less wind and relatively calm seas, favorable for fishing activities.

"Recent fishing trips have been more successful, with many boats encountering schools of fish, so the fishermen are very excited. If the weather continues to be favorable, this year's southern fishing season will surely be bountiful," Mr. Tung shared.

According to fisherman Nguyen Vu from Lien Huong commune, this is the time when many types of seafood appear in greater numbers, especially mackerel, anchovies, scad, and squid. In the past few days, many boats have repeatedly caught schools of mackerel.

"Currently, the cost of each fishing trip is quite high, but if they hit a good school of fish, have a stable catch, and the selling price is stable, the fishermen can still make a profit and have more motivation to stay at sea for longer periods," Mr. Vu said.

According to local fishermen, even as they enter the peak season for the southern fishing season, they remain highly aware of and comply with regulations on combating IUU (Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated) fishing, maintaining the installation of vessel tracking devices, keeping complete fishing logs, and adhering to regulations when venturing out to sea, contributing to a successful fishing season.

Currently, Lam Dong province has over 8,400 fishing vessels with nearly 50,000 workers directly involved in seafood exploitation. Of these, more than 1,900 vessels, measuring 15 meters or longer, operate in offshore waters and are relatively well-equipped with modern fishing and product preservation technologies. Alongside developing fishing activities, the locality continues to effectively maintain solidarity groups and fishing unions to support fishermen in their work at sea, while also contributing to the protection of maritime sovereignty .

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Lam Dong province, in the first months of the year, despite difficulties in fishing activities due to erratic weather patterns and high fuel and material prices, fishermen in the province maintained stable fishing operations. Many offshore fishing vessels actively stayed at sea. Some fishing methods such as purse seine, gillnet, and squid fishing continued to achieve good results, contributing to increasing the province's total catch. In the first four months of 2026, the province's total seafood catch reached over 72,350 tons (an increase of 2.82% compared to the same period last year).
