Notably, Mr. Bay has a technique for growing sweet potato leaves in greenhouses. This helps to limit pest and disease attacks, resulting in a high yield. He grows sweet potato leaves on an area of more than 1,000 square meters of land. After planting, he begins harvesting after about 40 days, and then harvests again every 20-23 days.
According to Mr. Bay, initial soil preparation is crucial for the healthy growth of sweet potato leaves. The land must be raised into high ridges, well-drained, and fertilized with organic fertilizer combined with lime to improve soil quality. After each harvest, he applies supplementary fertilizer to stimulate new shoots. The current price of sweet potato leaves ranges from 15,000 to 18,000 VND/kg. Thanks to continuous harvesting, the income from sweet potato leaves provides a steady stream of income, helping him maintain a consistent cash flow while waiting for longer-term crops like loofah or winter squash to be harvested.
One of the secrets to Mr. Bay's highly effective farming model is that he never lets the land lie fallow. After each harvest, he quickly prepares the soil, removes the residue, and immediately plants a new crop. Continuously rotating crops helps limit pests and diseases while maximizing production time. "Farming now requires careful planning; you can't leave any land idle. Each crop has a different harvest time, and if you arrange things properly, you'll have income all year round," Mr. Bay shared.
Not only is he a successful businessman , Mr. Bay is also willing to share his experience with other farmers in the area. According to him, collaboration and mutual learning are crucial for sustainable development. "I am ready to provide technical guidance to anyone who wants to grow vegetables. During the production process, I always research and apply scientific advancements to improve production and business efficiency," Mr. Bay affirmed.
Mr. Nguyen Van Bay's specialized vegetable farming model is a testament to the dynamism and creativity of Can Tho farmers in transforming crop structures and adapting to market demands. Thanks to careful planning and the application of sound techniques, he has built a stable income, contributing to improving his family's living standards and promoting local economic development.
