Mr. Nguyen Van Son, Chairman of the People's Committee of Hoi An City, informed that the city is researching and preparing a dossier to submit to Cam Thanh Tourist Village as the best rural tourist village in 2025.
“During discussions, Ms. Zoritsa Urosevic, Deputy Secretary-General of UN Tourism, stated that Cam Thanh coconut forest fully deserves to be recognized as the best tourist village because it attracts an ‘enormous’ number of visitors and has very distinct community products such as basket boats and rural riverine experiences,” Mr. Son said.
The Cam Thanh coconut forest, spanning over 80 hectares, retains many unique features of a mangrove ecosystem at the "coastal estuary," surrounded by numerous sandbanks and lagoons. Coconut trees grow along both banks of the river and stream, forming a lush forest that remains green year-round.
Adjacent to the coconut forest are traditional craft villages such as: building thatched houses from bamboo and coconut, fishing, squid fishing, shrimp farming, fish farming, and many other rich cultural features of the villages and hamlets that are still preserved... This is the potential and advantage for developing ecotourism combined with community tourism.
Dr. Chu Manh Trinh - from the Cu Lao Cham Marine Reserve Management Board - stated: "When ecotourism develops, Cam Thanh tourism will shine even brighter and its value will become even more prominent. Because ecotourism requires conservation, and Cam Thanh is conserving it; it requires a community, and Cam Thanh is preserving that community, and it will especially provide significant support for future economic development."
Rice paddies, boats, buffalo herds, fish ponds... things that are intimately connected to the daily lives of the people are now being transformed into unique and attractive products for tourists.
A group of tourists from the UK, returning for their second visit to Cam Thanh Coconut Forest, shared: “This time, we find everything much more interesting. We feel like real Vietnamese because we get to experience the life of the local people, which is very interesting, friendly, and safe…”
Tourism in Cam Thanh has rapidly developed, creating a vibrant atmosphere in this riverside area. Currently, Cam Thanh has 103 operating accommodation establishments. The number of boats and coracle vessels has also increased rapidly, with 1,347 registered and operating, mainly concentrated in the two villages of Van Lang and Thanh Tam.
Integrating ecotourism development with community-based tourism is the main development direction that the people of Cam Thanh are unanimously pursuing.
In 2023, the Seven-Acre Coconut Forest Historical and Cultural Relic Area in Cam Thanh commune was recognized by UNESCO as a "Typical Asia-Pacific Tourist Destination" and was honored at the Vietnam-India Cultural and Economic Exchange Forum. In 2024, the basket boat experience in Cam Thanh Coconut Forest was ranked among the top 25 most attractive boat experiences in the world .
If Cam Thanh is recognized by UN Tourism as the Best Tourist Village in 2025, the tourism brand of this "coastal estuary" region will become even more prominent.
