Installing 585-ton Rotor in Vietnam's Largest Hydropower Plant Expansion

At 11:20 am on July 6, after three hours of installation, Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) successfully installed the rotor of unit 1 of the Hoa Binh Hydropower Expansion Project (Phu Tho province).

The implementing unit is the Power Project Management Board 1 and the contractors have implemented the project. This is an important milestone in the process of installing equipment and completing the generator set.

Directly supervising the Rotor installation process at the construction site were Mr. Dang Hoang An - Chairman of EVN Board of Directors, EVN leaders and Power Project Management Board 1.

Preparing to connect unit 1 to the grid on August 19

The rotor of unit 1 of the Hoa Binh hydropower expansion project weighs about 585 tons and is the rotating part of the generator.

The process of successfully placing the stator - a static, non-moving part of the electrical machine, commonly found in generators, electric motors and transformers of the unit must ensure technical requirements with high precision.

Rotor installation is an important step in the chain of generator installation stages, requiring synchronous and precise coordination between construction, supervision and electromechanical equipment installation units.

The completion of the installation of the rotor of Unit 1 of the Hoa Binh Hydropower Expansion Project is of great significance, creating a premise for continuing to carry out many electromechanical installation items, moving towards testing and operating the unit with the goal of generating electricity from Unit 1 of the project on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day September 2.

Speaking to the press, Mr. Pham Hong Phuong, deputy general director of EVN, said this is the heaviest piece of equipment in the hydroelectric plant.

The installation of the rotor is an important step, a prerequisite for achieving the goal of connecting the first generator unit to the grid on August 19 as requested by the Prime Minister .

After that, Mr. Phuong said that EVN will focus on installing the rotor assembly of unit 2, expected to be completed after three months and then unit 2 will be connected to the grid one month later. Thus, around the end of November, early December, unit 2 will be connected to the grid according to the plan.

Increase capacity for the national power system

Mr. Phuong shared that building a hydroelectric plant has many difficulties because there are thousands of details, components, and parts.

In particular, the Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant expansion project is invested and built on the basis of existing hydropower plants, so construction, blasting, and heavy equipment transportation must be closely monitored to minimize impacts on existing plants and the environment.

Notably, in 2021, the project encountered problems due to landslides due to geological conditions and heavy rain. At the request of the Prime Minister, the project had to stop for 11 months for careful review and assessment before resuming construction in October 2022, focusing on speeding up the construction progress.

Therefore, Mr. Phuong said that the project implementation needs to be closely monitored at every stage, with a team of skilled workers installing to control and minimize risks. Up to now, all stages of design, construction, construction, installation, and hydromechanical equipment are manufactured by domestic contractors. Only electrical equipment such as rotors and generators are imported.

According to EVN, the Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant Expansion Project is an important national project, approved by the Prime Minister for investment. The project has a scale of 2 units, with a total capacity of 480 MW (2 x 240 MW). The average annual electricity output is about 490 million kWh, with a total investment of over VND9,220 billion.

As the largest hydropower expansion project in Vietnam, Mr. Phuong said that when put into operation, the project will increase the peak capacity of the national power system, improve the economic exploitation and operation of the Hoa Binh hydropower plant in the system.

Thereby improving the ability to regulate frequency, stabilize the frequency of the national power system, contributes to reducing the operating costs of the power system; reducing the working intensity of existing generators, thereby prolonging the life of the equipment, saving maintenance and repair costs.
