Nguyen Thuy Linh lost 13 places to her opponent, missing out on $9,000 in prize money.

(VTC News) - Nguyen Thuy Linh lost to Manami Suizu (Japan) in the final match of the Canada Open 2025 badminton tournament this morning, July 7.

After defeating Amalie Schulz in the semi-finals, Nguyen Thuy Linh faced Manami Suizu in the final of the 2025 Canada Open badminton tournament. This is a BWF World Tour tournament held in Ontario, Canada with a championship prize of 18,000 USD (more than 470 million VND). Despite being rated higher, Nguyen Thuy Linh lost after 2 sets to Manami Suizu.

The Japanese player, born in 2003, is currently ranked 35th in the Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings, 13 places behind Nguyen Thuy Linh. This is only her second time participating in the BWF World Tour. At the 2025 Canada Open, Manami Suizu is the 6th seed, while Nguyen Thuy Linh is the 2nd seed. In the semi-finals, the Japanese player defeated the 1st seed - the world's 19th ranked player - Michelle Li.

Facing Nguyen Thuy Linh, Manami Suizu won without much time. The Vietnamese athlete only competed with her opponent in the first 10-12 points of each round.

Manami Suizu then created a series of consecutive points. In set 1, after leading 8-6, the Japanese player scored 5 consecutive points to create a safe gap. Nguyen Thuy Linh could not turn the situation around and lost 12-21.

In set 2, the Vietnamese player took the lead but lost the advantage, allowing her opponent to catch up. After the score was 6-6, Manami Suizu took the lead again. Nguyen Thuy Linh lost 14-21 in set 2 and was defeated in the end.

As runner-up, Nguyen Thuy Linh received a prize of 9,120 USD (nearly 240 million VND) (lower than the championship prize of nearly 9,000 USD). She was awarded an additional 5,950 points on the world rankings.
