'Folk knowledge' Bun bo Hue becomes National Intangible Cultural Heritage

On the afternoon of July 5, information from the Department of Culture - Sports (VHTT) of Hue City said that the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism has just signed Decision No. 2203/QD-BVHTTDL officially including "Folk knowledge about Bun Bo Hue" in the list of national intangible cultural heritage.

This is a worthy recognition of the historical, cultural, artistic and economic value of this typical dish imbued with the identity of the ancient capital of Hue.

According to the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Hue City, not only famous domestically and internationally, Hue beef noodle soup is the crystallization of hundreds of years of folk knowledge.   passed down through many generations. This dish is closely associated with religious life, community activities and traditional craft villages, such as Van Cu and O Sa vermicelli villages in Hue... Over time, Hue beef vermicelli has become a culinary symbol of the ancient capital of Hue, where each bowl of Hue beef vermicelli is not only rich in flavor but also contains the culture and memories of the land.

2014, Hue beef noodle soup   Praised by celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain on CNN as “the best soup I’ve ever tasted”. In 2016, Bun Bo Hue was listed in the Top 100 Asian culinary dishes by the Asia Record Organization. Recently, Taste Atlas ranked Hue 28th in the 100 cities with the best food in the world, of which Bun Bo Hue is a “must-try” dish when visiting the ancient capital.

Behind the famous noodle dish is the effort to preserve the heritage of many generations of artisans such as Mai Thi Tra, Hoang Thi Nhu Huy, Ton Nu Thi Ha, Phan Ton Gia Hien... They have preserved and taught the secret of cooking beef noodle soup from choosing ingredients, stewing broth, seasoning to presentation, preserving the "soul" of Hue cuisine.

This heritage registration not only affirms the value of Hue's culinary culture but also serves as an important foundation for the city to continue to promote the preservation, promotion and development of cultural and tourism industries. The Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Hue City said that it will coordinate with artisans, departments, sectors and the community to organize the teaching, honor and spread the value of folk knowledge about Hue beef noodle soup to the public at home and abroad.

In addition, the registration also has practical significance in the roadmap to make Hue a UNESCO creative city in the culinary field, where bun bo is not only a dish, but also a part of Vietnamese cultural identity on the world culinary map.
