With over 30 years of experience in treating endocrine diseases and obesity, and as the former head of the Endocrinology Department at Cho Ray Hospital, Dr. Lam Van Hoang is the director of the Center for Weight Control and Obesity Treatment.
The obesity rate is increasing every year.
According to Dr. Lam Van Hoang, nearly one-fifth of Vietnam's population (19.5%) is overweight, with 2.1% being obese. The annual obesity rate in our country is increasing by 38%, compared to 10% - 20% in other Southeast Asian countries.
Obese individuals face an increased risk of developing one or more diseases simultaneously: one study showed that a BMI over 30 resulted in a 52% higher risk of osteoarthritis, 51% higher risk of hypertension, 40% higher risk of sleep apnea, 35% higher risk of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), 29% higher risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, 21% higher risk of myocardial infarction, 21% higher risk of diabetes, 19% higher risk of major depression, 9% higher risk of polycystic ovary syndrome, 8% higher risk of ischemic heart disease, 3.5% higher risk of congestive heart failure, 3% higher risk of stroke, and an increased risk of cancer…
Patients need effective yet easy-to-implement treatment methods.
Treating overweight and obesity requires a multidisciplinary approach, accurately identifying the underlying cause, and implementing modern, scientific treatment protocols; it's not simply about exercise and nutrition.
Dr. Le Ba Ngoc, Deputy Director of the Center for Weight Control and Obesity Treatment, emphasized: "Patients need effective, safe, and easy-to-implement treatment methods. This is a major challenge in treating overweight and obesity. And Tam Anh General Hospital has achieved this, being the first obesity treatment center in Vietnam located within a general hospital system with a multi-modal treatment protocol, coordinating multiple specialties, helping overweight and obese people lose weight, reduce visceral fat, reverse the disease, and prevent a series of complications associated with overweight and obesity."
The establishment of this center with its modern multi-modal treatment protocol has been a long-held dream. This is because, no matter how effective the treatment for cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, or endocrine disorders is, if the patient's weight is not controlled, or if they cannot lose weight or body fat, it will negatively impact the treatment outcomes. It's like cutting the grass without uprooting the roots, not to mention the difficulty in controlling dangerous complications later on. At the same time, controlling weight and treating obesity effectively will significantly reduce the progression of the aforementioned dangerous diseases.
The Weight Control and Obesity Treatment Center operates simultaneously at Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, Tam Anh General Hospital in Hanoi , and Tam Anh Multi-specialty Clinic in District 7, Ho Chi Minh City, with the criteria of safety, effectiveness, simplicity, and ease of implementation.
The center offers a full range of methods for weight management and comprehensive, multi-modal treatment of overweight and obesity according to international standards. This includes the participation of endocrinology experts, medical obesity treatment using new drugs globally recognized by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA), treatment with modern high-tech equipment, and surgical interventions such as gastric balloon placement or gastric reduction surgery. In addition, the support of nutrition and sports medicine specialists ensures clients and patients receive comprehensive care and support to lose weight, reduce body fat, reduce visceral fat, control dyslipidemia, support treatment of fatty liver disease, and mitigate the risk of complications such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and endocrine disorders.
Ms. Luong Thi Loan Thanh, 45 years old, before and after 2.5 months of treatment at the Weight Control and Obesity Treatment Center, has reduced a range of indicators: 9.9 kg in weight, 28 cm in waist circumference, 5 cm in thigh circumference, 5 cm in upper arm circumference, 12.2 cm² of visceral fat, and 4 kg/cm² in BMI. Notably, her blood sugar disorder, knee joint pain, and acid reflux have disappeared, and her fatty liver has been reduced to grade 1. She has also changed all her clothes from size XXL to size L.
The images show Mr. H. (a Vietnamese expatriate from Cambodia) before and after 10 months of treatment, having lost 22kg and recovered from fatty liver disease thanks to treatment at the Center.
Ms. Ngo Tran Thanh Thao, 34 years old, before and after 3 months of treatment at the Center, experienced a series of reductions in her measurements: 6kg weight, 13cm waist circumference, 20cm² visceral fat, and a 0.9kg/m² BMI. Notably, she increased muscle mass, and her visceral fat area decreased from 125.8cm² to 100cm² (a safe level for health).
