A medical helicopter from the 18th Army Corps ( Ministry of National Defense ) recently coordinated with the Air Medical Team of Military Hospital 175 (Ministry of National Defense) to conduct a medical flight, safely transporting two patients from the Truong Sa Special Zone (Khanh Hoa province) to the mainland.

This special flight lasted 14 hours, twice as long as other typical emergency flights.

Earlier, at around 2 PM on December 21st, Ms. TTTH (born in 1991), residing on Sinh Ton Island and 20 weeks pregnant, experienced vaginal bleeding. At 7 PM the same day, she began experiencing abdominal pain and uterine contractions and was taken to the Sinh Ton Island Medical Clinic.

Here, pregnant women receive remote professional consultation via telephone with Military Hospital 175 and are prescribed treatment with antispasmodic and hemostatic medications.

However, at 11:25 PM, the pregnant woman experienced heavy lower abdominal bleeding accompanied by pinkish mucus discharge, her cervix was dilated 2 cm, her pulse was rapid, her blood pressure dropped, and no fetal heartbeat was detected on ultrasound.

An emergency consultation with doctors from Military Hospital 175 concluded that the pregnant woman was at risk of postpartum hemorrhage and hemorrhagic shock, and needed urgent transport to the mainland.

In compliance with the orders of the Ministry of National Defense, at 6:00 AM on December 22nd, the EC225 VN-8620 helicopter of the 18th Army Corps took off from Tan Son Nhat airport, heading directly to Truong Sa.

During this flight, the Air Ambulance Team of Military Hospital 175 reinforced the team with specialized obstetrics and gynecology emergency care and brought along equipment and blood products in reserve for emergency surgery on the island.

At 12:00 PM the same day, the emergency team reached the patient on Sinh Ton Island. After examination and ultrasound, the doctors determined that the fetus was stillborn and bleeding profusely. They immediately provided emergency treatment by removing the stillborn fetus and placenta, controlling uterine bleeding, administering fluids, blood transfusions, uterine contraction-enhancing medication, hemostatic drugs, antibiotics, and painkillers.

After more than 1 hour and 30 minutes of intensive treatment, the patient's condition stabilized and they were deemed fit for transport by plane back to the mainland.

Notably, during the flight to Sinh Ton Island, the air ambulance team received information about a patient with a traumatic brain injury diagnosed as suspected intracranial hematoma, with increased intracranial pressure not yet ruled out. This case also required emergency air transport to the mainland for further diagnosis and specialized treatment.

Captain and doctor Ta Van Bach, head of the air ambulance team at Military Hospital 175, reported that due to a patient with a traumatic brain injury, the helicopter had to fly lower than usual, and therefore the flight time was longer.

Throughout the transport process, the emergency medical team had to closely monitor the condition of both patients to ensure absolute safety. Despite the long flight and the need to reach and treat two critically ill patients on two different islands, thanks to the close coordination between the 18th Air Force flight crew and the air ambulance team of Military Hospital 175, both patients were safely brought back to the mainland, landing at Military Hospital 175 at 7:30 PM on December 22nd.

Immediately upon arriving on land, the patients were taken to the Emergency Department, where they underwent urgent, in-depth testing, consultations, and timely treatment.
