Cholesteatoma in the child's ear was removed.

According to the patient's family, H. had a mild earache at home and went to the Hai Ha District Medical Center for an ENT endoscopy and was surprised to discover a pearl-like white mass in his right ear. Before that, the child had never had otitis media, ear discharge, or middle ear intervention.

District doctors quickly consulted remotely with ENT doctors of Quang Ninh General Hospital, diagnosed the child with Cholesteatoma of the right middle ear and transferred him to the provincial hospital for endoscopic surgery to remove the tumor.

At Quang Ninh General Hospital, H. had a CT scan of the temporal bone showing a tumor located on the inside of the ossicular chain. The child was then diagnosed with congenital cholesteatoma. This is a rare disease that can cause dangerous complications and affect the child's hearing function if not treated promptly with surgery.

After being consulted and explained thoroughly, H.'s family trusted and decided to have surgery at the hospital.

With the support of modern endoscopic equipment, the surgeon peeled off the skin flap of the external auditory canal and the tympanic membrane, skillfully removed the tumor from the tympanic cavity and restored the surgical field. After 1 hour of surgery, the Cholesteatoma was completely removed. The patient recovered well, without headache, dizziness, bleeding, fever, and eating well.

The team of doctors performed ear surgery.

Doctor Pham Quang Huy (Quang Ninh General Hospital) said that Choleateatoma is a type of keratinized, soft, ivory-white tumor that can be located in the middle ear or anywhere in the temporal bone. Congenital cholesteatoma in children is a very rare disease, with a rate of 0.12/100,000 children, occurring 2-3 times more often in boys than in girls.

If this disease is not detected and treated promptly, it will cause serious complications, because it has the ability to corrode and destroy components of the middle ear, temporal bone and neighboring structures. Therefore, it is easy to cause dangerous complications, such as: affecting hearing and speech functions, causing deafness, facial nerve paralysis, semicircular canal fistula, and even intracranial complications: meningitis, brain abscess, lateral vein thrombosis.

Doctor Pham Quang Huy also recommends that when seeing any unusual signs in a child's ear, parents should take their child to a reputable medical facility for early diagnosis and timely treatment, avoiding serious complications later.
