On Tuesday, Morocco was unexpectedly awarded the African Cup of Nations title two months after the tournament had already concluded. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) stated that its appeals panel ruled Senegal "was declared the loser in the final" and that their 1-0 victory in extra time was now a 3-0 win for host nation Morocco. This decision means Morocco has won the African Cup of Nations for the second time in history, after a 50-year wait.

Senegal's actions were heavily criticized and seen as a major stain on what was otherwise a very successful tournament. The CAF also announced the cancellation of the $100,000 fine against Moroccan striker Ismael Saibari and reduced his suspension to one match.

CAF also stated that the fine imposed on Morocco for the incident involving ball boys attempting to steal the Senegal goalkeeper's towel near the goalpost has been reduced to $50,000. However, the $100,000 fine imposed on Morocco for players and officials attempting to interfere with the VAR process remains unchanged.

In the final match on January 18th in Rabat, the Senegalese players, led by coach Pape Thiaw, walked off the pitch in protest during 15 minutes of added time. This action stemmed from Senegal being denied a goal just minutes before Morocco were awarded a penalty. The Senegalese team expressed their anger at referee Jean-Jacques Ndala for awarding Morocco the penalty after a VAR review.

Fans attempted to storm the pitch when Morocco were awarded the decisive penalty. As play resumed, striker Brahim Diaz's penalty kick was saved by goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. The match went into extra time, and Pape Gueye scored the only goal to give Senegal the victory.

At the initial disciplinary hearing, CAF fined the Senegalese and Moroccan players and officials more than $1 million and banned them from competing, but this did not change the final result.
