Bach Ma National Park has a total natural area of over 37,400 hectares, located in the provinces of Thua Thien Hue and Quang Nam. Bach Ma Peak, with an altitude of 1,444m above sea level, boasts majestic natural scenery, lush greenery throughout the year, and picturesque waterfalls and streams. Spring is the time when many endemic plant species in this forest bloom, especially rhododendrons and Vanilla Schenzenica orchids. This is also the time when Bach Ma is often covered in fog, creating an "illusory mountain" that attracts many tourists (Photo: Vu Linh).

Pham Thi Thanh Dat (wearing glasses, standing in the middle of the photo), a Master's student in Hue, discovered the White Horse Begonia in 2016 and also announced the discovery of the Vanilla Schenzenica orchid on this mountaintop. Ms. Dat explained that the name Vanilla Schenzenica was chosen because this species had previously been discovered and announced in China. This species has only been recorded in Hong Kong, Guangdong (China), and Bach Ma National Park. Ms. Dat returned to the area to pollinate the Vanilla Schenzenica orchid (Photo: Vi Thao).

According to Master Dat, the Vanilla Schenzenica orchid is a species of orchid belonging to the genus Vanilla, family Orchidaceae. The plant has a vine-like stem, 7-8mm in diameter, with many thick, elliptical leaves. Flowers usually bloom in spring, around February-March each year. The flowers have a mild fragrance, are pale yellow, and have five outer petals and one main, oval-shaped petal. In 2023, a Vanilla Schenzenica orchid discovered on the path leading down to Do Quyen waterfall produced 15 fruits after pollination, the longest of which measured 19cm (Photo: Vi Thao).

One of the most noteworthy and abundant flowers on the summit of Bach Ma Mountain is the rhododendron. This flower blooms only once in the spring. Besides the common red rhododendron, which is widely distributed from the core to the buffer zone of this National Park, the mountaintop also features rarer rhododendron species such as the white bell rhododendron with pink spots, the white bell rhododendron, and the rhododendron sim… (Photo: Vi Thao - Vu Linh).

Along with forest protection, biodiversity development, and attracting tourists, Bach Ma National Park is also tasked with conserving biodiversity and rescuing rare and endangered animals. Mr. Nguyen Vu Linh stated that in November 2023, the Vietnam Bear Rescue Project at Bach Ma National Park was inaugurated and put into operation. The center currently provides humane care for six bears. On February 26th, Bach Ma National Park released one rare white pheasant, belonging to group IB, back into the wild. Its population is dwindling, and the risk of inbreeding and genetic diversity is low. Simultaneously, a red-faced monkey, belonging to group IIB and weighing 4.5 kg, was voluntarily handed over by a local resident (Photo: Vi Thao).
