In the days leading up to the Lunar New Year, the ancient Thanh Ha pottery village in the heritage area of Hoi An bursts into flames, entering its busiest season of the year.
The rhythmic turning of the wheel, the nimble movements of the craftsmen's hands, and the warmth from the blazing furnaces created an atmosphere of urgent, bustling, yet inspiring work.
This year, life in the ancient pottery village is even more vibrant as artisans pour their efforts into creating the image of the Horse, a mascot symbolizing resilience, perseverance, and the aspiration for breakthroughs in the new year.
To complete a ceramic figurine, artisans from Thanh Ha pottery village must source clay from the lower reaches of the Thu Bon River. The clay is carefully filtered, kneaded repeatedly until smooth and pliable, then shaped, naturally dried, and continuously fired in a kiln for about 24 hours. Upon release, the natural reddish-orange color of the fired clay not only creates a rustic beauty but has also become a "signature" of Thanh Ha pottery for over 500 years.
