Liverpool quickly rediscovered the taste of victory. |
Liverpool secured a 3-1 victory over Wolves in the fifth round of the FA Cup on the morning of March 7th. This result propelled Liverpool into the next round and erased the memory of their 1-2 defeat at Molineux in the Premier League earlier in the week.
The first half of the match was rather uneventful. Wolves failed to register a single shot in the first 45 minutes. Liverpool also didn't create many clear chances. The most notable moment came from Cody Gakpo, whose shot hit the post, but the play was ruled offside.
The game changed after the break. In the 51st minute, Andy Robertson received the ball about 25 meters from the goal and unleashed a powerful shot into the bottom right corner. Goalkeeper Sam Johnstone had no chance to save it. This was also the Scottish defender's first goal for Liverpool from outside the penalty area.
Liverpool doubled their lead just two minutes later. Robertson crossed from the left wing for Mohamed Salah to finish from close range. The assistant referee initially raised the flag for offside, but after consulting VAR, the goal was awarded.
Wolves tried to find a goal but struggled against the visitors' defense. In the 74th minute, Liverpool almost sealed the match. Curtis Jones dribbled past two defenders and curled a left-footed shot into the net, making it 3-0.
The home team only managed to score a consolation goal in injury time thanks to a strike from Hwang Hee-chan.
Robertson was the standout player of the match. The Scottish defender scored a goal and provided an assist, while also creating four chances. He also led the game in touches, successful passes, and ball recoveries.
According to statistics, Liverpool took 20 shots with an expected goals (xG) of 1.8. Meanwhile, Wolves only had four shots and achieved an xG of 0.44. These numbers demonstrate the visitors' superiority at Molineux.
