Jota left, leaving regrets for Liverpool fans. |
The highlight is that the club will build a permanent statue right at Anfield - a symbol of gratitude for the player wearing the number 20 shirt.
Liverpool players will wear the “Forever 20” logo on their shirts and stadium jackets for the 2025/26 season. A minute’s silence will be observed at Anfield ahead of the Premier League opener against Bournemouth on 15 August, and a fan-created mosaic will be displayed in the stands.
Since the tragedy, thousands of bouquets, scarves, banners and other tributes have covered the area around Anfield. The club said all the fresh flowers have been composted to help maintain flower beds at Anfield, AXA and Melwood. The remaining items will be recycled and become part of a memorial statue where fans can pay their respects to Jota.
Liverpool also announced that Jota’s No. 20 shirt would be retired from all levels, from the first team to the academy and women’s teams. Fans can print “Diogo J. 20” on their shirts at the club’s official store, with all profits going to the LFC Foundation. The charity will build a community football programme in Jota’s name to keep the Portuguese’s legacy and spirit alive.
In addition to the activities at Anfield, a memorial wreath will be laid before kick-off at pre-season friendlies in Hong Kong, Tokyo and on the Kop's own "holy ground".
Liverpool's decision is not only an emotional farewell, but also a message affirming Diogo Jota's special place in the hearts of fans and the club's history.
