On the morning of October 10, when floodwaters in many central streets of Thai Nguyen province began to recede, a series of cars that had been submerged for the past three days gradually appeared.
Cars covered in mud, lying among piles of trash and yellow mud stains created a heartbreaking scene after the historic flood.
In Phan Dinh Phung ward, the parking lot of a construction company, which used to be considered the "highest point" in the residential area, now suffers the same fate.
According to a resident living near this area, when the water rose, everyone in the neighborhood thought it was safe here, but unexpectedly the water was over the roof. "Nearly 40 cars, from small cars to luxury cars, were all stuck there for days, now when they opened the doors, mud flooded in," this person said with a choked voice.
On the roads around Phan Dinh Phung ward, many people were heartbroken to see their cars covered in mud or lying on their sides on the side of the road.
Some car owners returned to check and tried to start the car but failed. Mr. T.D.D., residing in Phan Dinh Phung ward, said: "My car was left in the warehouse, propped up on bricks but it was still flooded. Now the interior is full of mud and the electronics are broken. I thought I could avoid it, but the flood came so fast that I couldn't react in time."
Not far away, Xuan Hoa area - where many people park their vehicles to avoid flooding - is also littered with mud.
Dozens of cars lined up, mud streaks covering the body, windows and even the inside of the cabin.
Ms. LHN stood silently in front of the white car that could no longer be started, her voice dropping. “The car was bought just over a year ago, the water rose up every step without me thinking it would be that high. Now the rescue team is overloaded, they haven’t reached yet, I can only temporarily wipe it up and wait for them to come and tow it away,” Ms. N. shared.
According to records, on many central streets such as Bac - Nam, Hoang Ngan, Cach Mang Thang Tam, ... the water has almost completely receded but the mud is still thick.
Hundreds of cars, from economy cars to luxury cars, were submerged in 2-3 meter deep water. Some cars had broken windows, mud flooded into the interior, and some cars were carried dozens of meters.
According to a garage owner on Bac Kan Street, from yesterday to this morning (October 10), his garage has received nearly 30 heavily flooded cars. “Most of them have completely damaged electrical systems, rotten interiors, and the cost to repair them can be half the price of the car. Many owners have given up because it is no longer worth repairing,” the garage owner said.
Currently, rescue units in Thai Nguyen are operating at full capacity but still cannot meet the demand.
Some car owners have to hire a tow truck from Hanoi , costing several million dong per trip.
