On the evening of October 10, Associate Professor Dr. Mai Xuan Truong - Principal of Thai Nguyen University of Education - said that although the incident did not originate from personal intention, the school's leaders recognized responsibility and seriously learned from the experience.
According to him, the school has also worked with the cafeteria to request the suspension of the employee who made the above mistake and pledged not to repeat the offense.
"The school hopes to receive the sharing and sympathy of all levels, sectors, parents and the whole society. We commit to promptly remedy, review the process, strengthen inspection and supervision to prevent similar situations from happening in the future," said Mr. Truong.
Previously, Tuoi Tre Online reported that since October 9, social networks have been abuzz when some accounts said that students of Thai Nguyen University of Education "complained" that when the school was "submerged" in water, students were isolated and had no electricity, and the dormitory canteen service made it difficult to receive charity meals to sell rice for 30,000 VND.
There are online accounts saying that the school cafeteria also does not allow students to pay by bank transfer during the rainy and flood days, only accepting cash, causing many students to have no money to buy food and go hungry.
According to the school's leadership, at around 10:30 a.m. on October 8, a resident walked to the school's dormitory, met a dormitory management staff member, and expressed his wish to support some lunches for students.
Because he could not get the direction from his superiors, this employee did not dare to make a decision on his own and discussed it with the canteen service provider. Afterwards, the canteen staff made a decision on their own and responded that they would not accept these subsidized meals.
"The above unfortunate incident arose because the cafeteria staff decided and responded on their own, without any direction or intervention from the school. At the same time, the cafeteria's temporary decision to only accept cash for lunch on October 8 was also done by the cafeteria staff on their own, not by the school's policy.
Since the afternoon of the same day, the school has coordinated with support units and benefactors to ensure the provision of free meals for all students in dormitories affected by storms, floods and inundation," said the school leader.
The school confirmed that "there was no instruction related to the above incident". At the same time, it said that the service unit providing the dining hall had committed that the price of meals would remain the same as usual, and that there would be no price increases or group interests in serving students during the storm and flood.
