Thai Nguyen devastated after historic flood.

After the historic flood, every area in Thai Nguyen was devastated, with schools littered with mud and rubbish. Pictured is the area in front of Trung Vuong Primary School after the water receded.

Ms. Nguyen Thanh Mai, the school’s principal, said that despite being located in the center, the school was still heavily flooded. Most of the equipment and electronic devices were damaged due to being submerged in water for many days. The school campus was turned into a desolate wasteland.

The classroom was in disarray, with tables and chairs piled up after the storm.

"Just a few months ago, the school had just renovated a three-story building with 18 classrooms. Parents also joined hands to decorate and prepare equipment for students to welcome the new school year. The storm came and destroyed everything in an instant. Hundreds of books, notebooks and blankets of students were buried in mud," Ms. Mai said, bursting into tears.

Storm No. 11 also left behind heavy damage at Gia Sang 915 Primary and Secondary School (Gia Sang Ward). Classrooms are still submerged in water. Mud covers all desks, chairs and equipment, making it difficult to restore.

The school's dining and kitchen areas were flooded with murky water. Cooking utensils (pots, dishes) were discolored and covered with dirt.

Water flooded into the Foreign Language room, destroying most of the computers and electronic equipment, causing countless damages.

Lien Co Kindergarten (Phan Dinh Phung ward) is submerged in a vast sea of water that has not yet receded.

A school representative said: "After Typhoon Matmo, the entire first floor of the three main classrooms was deeply flooded. The houses of 50 staff and teachers were also severely flooded. By 8am on October 9, the water in the school yard was about 50cm deep, and electricity and clean water were cut off. The school is using the remaining water to wash away mud in 12 classrooms on the first floor and transport damaged equipment."

The University of Education (Thai Nguyen University) is also one of the educational institutions most severely affected by storm No. 11. The floods caused deep inundation, damaging equipment, records and transcripts.

Of the school’s eight buildings, seven had their first floors flooded. The machinery, equipment, lecture halls and meeting rooms on the first floor were all damaged. The core library system, which had just been invested with over 80 billion VND, was also deeply flooded and suffered heavy damage.

Many schools in Thai Nguyen are focusing on overcoming the consequences of storms and floods to welcome students back to school, as early as next Monday.
