In Vietnam, projects applying AI to music are creating a lot of controversy. Technology engineer Nguyen Hoang Bao Dai once introduced an AI model that can write 10 songs in just 1 second. At the end of 2022, at the HOZO International Music Festival (HCMC), developer Pencil Group officially introduced two surreal singers Michau and Damsan, while virtual singer Ann also released her first MV "How to say I love you". However, after a rather lackluster debut, Ann quickly disappeared from the market.
Recently, the song “Say mot doi vi em” composed by Ken Quach - HUONGMYBONG with 10% support from AI and performed by “AI singer” has created a “storm” on social networks, reaching millions of views and a series of covers on TikTok. When singer Nguyen Vu re-recorded the song and released the MV on September 25, his version was considered “more emotional and soulful” than AI’s version.
Social networks also spread many videos of “AI singers” performing Trinh Cong Son’s music such as “Diem Xua” or “Ha Trang” with a strong rock style, completely different from the familiar lyrical and profound quality.
The video “Diem Xua” on the YouTube channel “Nhac Tinh AI” alone has attracted more than 302,000 views after 9 days of publication. The AI cover “Xin con goi ten nhau” reached 103,000 views. Meanwhile, the cover version “Ha trang” posted on October 6 quickly reached thousands of views after only 24 hours. After 4 days, the rock-ballad style cover version “performed” by AI reached 153,000 views.

These remixes have created a wave of mixed opinions. One side believes that it is a new creative direction that helps Vietnamese music become more modern. While many people are concerned that AI is fading the soul of Trinh Cong Son's music.
Some astute viewers even discovered that the AI sang the wrong lyrics, changing the original line "thuo mat xanh xan" to "thu mat xanh xan", or the line "Lam sao em nho nhung vet chim di (migratory birds)" was sung as "chim di".
Some Vietnamese artists have seen AI as an experimental tool.
In early October this year, musician Thai Nguyen released the MV " Peace Song", marking a step in combining music with AI technology when introducing virtual singer AI/T (Ai Trinh), an image he himself built after many months of research.
Singer Dan Truong is one of the few people who actively used AI in the MV "Em oi vi dau" in 2023, although he had to admit that the AI image was "dry and lacking in emotion".
In the visualizer MV “Hoa Hong” promoting the live concert “Sketch a Rose”, singer Ha Anh Tuan and his crew also used AI to create animations that repeat throughout the MV.
The image of musician Trinh Cong Son, restored by AI in the performance "Linking Hands" on the television show "Eternal Triumph" in April this year, also caused much controversy.
The song "New Day Flower Land" is an AI product operated by young Vi Hoang Anh for about half a month. After that, musician Duong Truong Giang and director Viet Dang edited and completed it to put on stage and performed by Duong Hoang Yen in the program "Dien Bien - Brightening Daylight", making the audience curious but not really convincing.
Musician To Hieu shared his views with Lao Dong reporter: “Many of my colleagues expressed concern when AI increasingly encroaches on composing. Many songs created by AI are quite good and catchy, making musicians feel discouraged. Some singers want to sing AI music because it is cheap and does not incur copyright fees. But AI music lacks emotion and is sometimes forced into sound. That is the most obvious limitation, besides the fact that AI can compose countless songs.”
According to musician Nguyen Tien Manh - Vice President of the Hanoi Music Association, artificial intelligence (AI) is the trend of today's technology era, musicians can only learn to adapt but cannot resist this trend. "Once they understand the superior features of artificial intelligence, today's musicians can completely use them as a powerful assistant in composing and producing music. My personal opinion is inclined towards how to apply AI as a powerful support tool for artists' work. If people do not really try, they will be far behind the development of artificial intelligence", musician Nguyen Tien Manh shared.
