At 10 PM on December 27th, Liverpool will face bottom-placed Wolverhampton in the 18th round of the Premier League.
Liverpool are gradually forgetting about Salah.
At the start of the season, Liverpool gave the impression they would continue to dominate the league with five consecutive wins. This included a victory over one of the title contenders, Arsenal. However, their defeat to Crystal Palace in round 6 exposed Liverpool's problems.
Of all the stories, Salah's situation has been scrutinized the most. Clearly, in the first five wins of the season, the Egyptian star didn't make many impressive contributions. However, in the euphoria of victory, few people mentioned his shortcomings.
Until Arne Slot decisively benched him, Salah chose to criticize the coach and the team. It was a gesture of resentment, but also a signal to the management about his desire to leave. In response, Coach Arne Slot remained resolute in keeping Salah out of the starting lineup.
Despite a difficult start, Liverpool have found a solution. In their last five Premier League matches, they are unbeaten (3 wins, 2 draws). In their last two games, Liverpool secured victories against tough opponents Brighton and Tottenham.
Those were matches where Salah still didn't make much of an impact. It seems the Salah issue has been resolved, as Ekitike, Wirtz, and Szoboszlai are now providing reassurance in Liverpool's attack.
Salah will continue to be absent during this period due to his commitments with the Egyptian national team at the African Cup of Nations (Afcon). However, Liverpool probably shouldn't worry too much about this. That being said, Wolverhampton are having a disastrous season. They currently sit at the bottom of the table with two draws, 15 losses, and no wins.
The first relegation spot is almost certainly going to Wolves. And with their current form, they are nothing short of easy prey for Liverpool as they seek their third consecutive Premier League victory.
Injury storm
Despite facing a weaker opponent, Arne Slot still has concerns. These concerns lie in the injury status of key players. Earlier this week, striker Alexander Isak underwent surgery and will be out for an extended period after sustaining an injury in the match against Tottenham.
The Swedish striker is still struggling despite arriving at Liverpool for a fee of £125 million. From a professional standpoint, the loss of Isak may not be significant. However, it still feels like a wasteful signing for Liverpool this season. Besides Isak, Liverpool's injury list is already quite long, including names like Conor Bradley, Florian Wirtz, Ibrahima Konate, Cody Gakpo, Wataru Endo...
Liverpool could secure three points against Wolverhampton. However, they still face long-term concerns regarding injuries. The upcoming fixtures are very demanding, posing a significant challenge as Liverpool strive to bounce back after a long period of struggle.
