(CLO) Mike Waltz, the national security advisor nominated by President-elect Donald Trump, has expressed concern about vulnerabilities in the U.S. airspace security system following a series of drone sightings in states such as New Jersey, Maryland, and Massachusetts.
Waltz emphasized that the current US system is insufficient to handle the drone threat, and called for the construction of an "Iron Dome" for the United States, inspired by Israel's renowned air defense system.
He stated, "We need a comprehensive defense system that not only addresses threats like hypersonic missiles, but also drones."
The administration of outgoing President Joe Biden downplayed concerns about the increasing number of drones, claiming that most were manned aircraft and that there was no evidence to suggest a threat to national security.
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas pledged that the agency would be transparent if it detected foreign involvement or criminal activity related to drones.
Several members of Congress , including Senator Amy Klobuchar and Representative Jim Himes, have called on the Biden administration to be more transparent to alleviate public concerns.
Klobuchar proposed holding a press conference to clarify the information and recommended reviewing and adjusting regulations related to drones.
The public also showed great interest, as evidenced by the formation of groups on social media such as the Facebook page "New Jersey Mystery Drones – let's solve it," which has nearly 70,000 members participating in discussions.
The sudden surge in drone reports raises questions about whether current surveillance measures are sufficient to protect U.S. airspace from potential threats.
Waltz and many lawmakers have stressed the need for closer cooperation between agencies such as the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Defense , and local agencies.
However, Representative Himes pointed out that, with modern satellite technology, America's adversaries could monitor more easily without using drones.
