Ngoc Linh ginseng is a particularly rare medicinal herb of Vietnam. In just the past 5 years, in the new Quang Ngai province (former Kon Tum province), this rare ginseng has helped thousands of households escape poverty.
Change thinking and way of doing
As one of the first people to grow Ngoc Linh ginseng, earning billions of dong each year, Mr. A Sy (born in 1972, residing in the new Mang Ri commune (Te Xang commune, old Tu Mo Rong district), is affectionately called "ginseng king" by the Xo Dang people here.
Mr. A Sy said: “Ngoc Linh Mountain is endowed by nature with a precious treasure, Ngoc Linh ginseng. However, decades ago, the people here did not realize the value of ginseng. They went into the forest to exploit it indiscriminately to sell it cheaply or exchange it for rice, clothes, and dried fish. Fearing that precious ginseng would become extinct, I and some people came up with a conservation plan. I took on the task of going to the village to buy ginseng from the people. I collected ginseng, incubated it until there was enough quantity, then carried it back to the forest to plant and propagate it.”
According to Mr. A Sy, when he went to the forest to plant ginseng, the villagers discouraged him, advising him not to because he could not manage the ginseng in the forest, it would fail, not to mention the many dangers, wild animals lurking... After nearly 12 years of hard work "eating and sleeping with ginseng" in the deep forests and mountains, he has built a precious ginseng garden. When they learned that he had grown valuable ginseng, the locals asked to join. "Currently, I have grown about 300,000 plants, equivalent to 30 hectares of Ngoc Linh ginseng. What makes me happier and more joyful is that from my success, the Xo Dang people have changed their way of thinking and working, switching to growing precious ginseng to develop the economy ," Mr. A Sy shared.
Along with individuals like Mr. A Sy, many local authorities have actively supported people to grow ginseng. For example, in Tu Mo Rong commune, at the beginning of this year, more than 3,300 Ngoc Linh ginseng seedlings were distributed for free to 40 poor, near-poor, and ethnic minority households. Immediately after receiving the ginseng, staff from the Tu Mo Rong Agricultural Service Center went with the people to the old forests planned for ginseng cultivation to plant the seeds.
Aiming to become a major medicinal herb region
According to statistics, in Tu Mo Rong commune, Mang Ri Moi commune... of the province, up to now, about 2,922 hectares of Ngoc Linh ginseng have been planted, reaching 65% of the target set by the Resolution of the Provincial Party Committee.
Ngoc Linh ginseng has significantly contributed to changing the awareness of local people from a mindset of waiting and relying on others to a mindset of proactively investing in economic development, shifting from slash-and-burn farming and deforestation to afforestation, thanks to which hundreds of hectares of forest are newly planted each year, creating an ecosystem to protect the buffer zone associated with tourism development.
However, in reality, there have been cases of fake Ngoc Linh ginseng being sold with tubers that look similar to Ngoc Linh ginseng. The first to suffer are customers who spend a large amount of money but do not buy the right quality product, while dedicated growers are in trouble. Therefore, to protect the Ngoc Linh ginseng brand and consumer rights, the province has allocated more than 13 billion VND to invest in a system of analytical equipment and equipment to test the components of ginseng; ginseng growing localities have also applied the process of establishing ginseng garden records for each business and individual. Some businesses have applied identification technology solutions, attaching chips to Ngoc Linh ginseng tubers.
To continue developing ginseng material areas and sustainably preserving Ngoc Linh ginseng genetic resources, in the coming time, authorities need to promote research and application of post-harvest technology, deep processing, improve quality standards and traceability.
