Lang Biang is a mountain range located in Lac Duong district, Lam Dong province. It is approximately 12 km north of Da Lat city and is a popular tourist destination.
On July 24th, three male tourists from Ho Chi Minh City were trekking Lang Biang along a trail and got lost in the dense forest. That afternoon, the three tourists lost their bearings and called the 114 emergency hotline for assistance. The Lac Duong District Police, along with a search and rescue team of approximately 30 people, divided into several groups and searched the forest along the trails under heavy rain and slippery conditions.
According to Mr. Nguyen Nhat Vu, Deputy General Director of Dalattourist, cases of getting lost in the Lang Biang mountain range are rare. The terrain here is gentle, making trekking easier than Ta Nang - Phan Dung, and most climbing routes have signs. The difficulty of conquering the peaks in Langbiang depends on the climbing route and the peak the tourist chooses to trek to.
The Lang Biang mountain range has two peaks: Ong Mountain, 2,124 m high, located within the Lang Biang tourist area, and Ba Mountain, 2,167 m high, under the management of Bidoup National Park.
Below are some safety tips from Mr. Nguyen Nhat Vu for tourists wishing to explore the Lang Biang mountain range.
Directions of movement
There are two ways to explore the Lang Biang mountain range. For sightseeing, visitors to the Lang Biang tourist area can take a Jeep along a trail to Ra Da Hill at an altitude of 1,929 m. From there, visitors can trek to the summit of Ong Mountain. The trekking route in the tourist area is clearly marked and easy to navigate. Because it is managed by the tourist area, the operating hours are from 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM.
Independent trekkers often choose to conquer Mount Ba. The average trekking time from the foot of the mountain to the summit takes about three hours, divided into two sections. First, trekkers follow the paved road used by Jeeps to take passengers to Ra Da Hill, then travel about 3-4 km to the intersection with the Bidoup National Park checkpoint, turn right onto the trail, and follow this path to the summit. This route is available on Google Maps, and trekkers can use it for directions. However, this section of the trail is steep, with many places where the markers are lost, making it easy to get lost.
Upon reaching the marked "bird-watching spot," visitors are only 960 meters from the summit of Mount Ba. From there, visitors continue climbing several high and steep steps. This section of the path lies beneath a very dense and damp forest canopy, making it prone to slipping.
Tourists choosing to trek Mount Ba should hire a local guide if they are unfamiliar with the terrain and lack experience in the forest. Currently, there are many day trekking tours in Lang Biang that tourists can consider, costing around 900,000 VND per person.
The best time to trek Lang Biang
There are two seasons in Langbiang: the rainy season from April to October, and the dry season from November to March. Currently, the mountain range is in the rainy season, with many mosquitoes and leeches, and the forest ground is damp, slippery, and difficult to navigate. For safety, visitors should choose to visit during the dry season, which is also when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom.
Visitors should depart early in the morning to manage their time effectively and reach the foot of the mountain before sunset if traveling on a day-long itinerary. For overnight camping, visitors should also leave early in the morning and set up camp after sunset, and explore the clouds the following morning. Traveling through the forest at night significantly increases the risk of getting lost.
Items to prepare
Visitors should wear athletic shoes with good grip. The paths in the forest can be a bit slippery, so bringing a walking stick is recommended for safety.
Visitors should prepare a light raincoat or waterproof jacket because sudden rain showers are common in the forest, even outside of the rainy season.
