Speaking about the decision, the Conservative politician said: “It is sad to have to leave Parliament – at least for now. I am being forced out by a small group of people, without any evidence to support their claims. This is not approved by even members of the Conservative Party, let alone the majority of the electorate.”
Previously, in July last year, Boris Johnson resigned as Prime Minister of the UK after three years in power. Prior to that, he had been involved in numerous scandals, causing discontent within the government, Parliament, and the political elite in the UK. Johnson's reputation suffered a serious blow.
It all began in 2020, when a series of parties for the Prime Minister's office staff were held right in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic, while restrictions prohibited such events.
Initially, Mr. Johnson gave conflicting information and refused to take responsibility for the incident. However, a subsequent special investigation revealed that in 2020 and 2021, when Britain was experiencing the peak of Covid-19, 16 parties were held at the Prime Minister's residence on Downing Street with 83 attendees, including members of Parliament who were fined for violating lockdown regulations.
In late May 2022, Mr. Johnson had to apologize and declare that he took full responsibility for the incident occurring in his presence.
