Statistics from Box Office Vietnam show that "The Ghost" had no competition at the box office last weekend. Immediately after its release, the 18+ rated horror film ended the streak of the Japanese animated blockbuster Doraemon at the top of the box office.

Tin Nguyen and Avin Lu star in The Ghost. |
By the end of June 7th, the film "Ma Xó" (The Ghost) had grossed over 52 billion VND – an astonishing achievement for a domestic horror film. Over the weekend alone, the project directed by Phan Bá Hỷ raked in more than 15 billion VND from approximately 4,200 screenings. At its current rate of earning, reaching 100 billion VND in revenue is entirely possible.
With a running time of 102 minutes, "The Ghost" tells the story of the difficult lives of a poor couple, Phu and Thao. Having suffered a miscarriage once, they must do everything in their power to care for the fragile fetus in Thao's womb. Then, their lives are turned upside down when the elderly mother-in-law passes away.
In her despair, Thao heeded the advice of a shaman and performed a ritual to summon wandering spirits to guard the house and protect her unborn child. This decision gradually uncovered a tragedy that seemed to have been buried forever.
The film features a familiar cast including Le Khanh, Tin Nguyen, Avin Lu, Hanh Thuy, and Sy Hau... After the first screenings, the film is receiving quite positive reactions, with many praising the captivating story, even though the idea isn't particularly original. The performances of the cast are also considered convincing.
Returning to the box office, while the past week saw the success of "The Ghost ," another domestic film, " The Hermit Crab," fared less favorably.
The film has seen a drastic reduction in screenings; on June 7th, only about 630 screenings were shown, bringing in 600 million VND – an alarming figure for a film that was released not long ago. Thanks to the momentum from the special screening sales, the total revenue of "Borrowed Shell" reached 14 billion VND . However, with the current box office situation, Dinh Tuan Vu's film will likely stop at the 20 billion VND mark. This figure is clearly not enough to recoup the producers' investment.

The Fire Tower has a rather unusual color scheme compared to the typical Vietnamese horror films. |
This week, Vietnamese cinemas welcome another domestic film, " The Fireman's Mansion ," also in the horror genre. Directed by Hung Tran, the film makes a strong initial impression with its experimental use of found-footage footage, a rather unusual approach in Vietnamese horror. However, the lack of any famous actors in the cast could be a hindrance to the marketing campaign, requiring "The Fireman's Mansion" to have outstanding quality to attract audiences.
