Warm joy

Running her calloused hands along the corrugated iron walls of her new house, Mrs. Duong Thi Duc, residing in Vinh Quoi hamlet, Vinh Thanh Trung commune, couldn't hide her joy. At her advanced age, she never thought she would welcome the new spring with such excitement and happiness as this year. From now on, this prefabricated house with a brick floor and corrugated iron roof and walls will be a solid home for her to live in. “I am so grateful to the local authorities, the Vinh Quoi hamlet leadership, and all the benefactors! My old house had a leaky roof and wobbly pillars, and it could have collapsed at any moment, making me sleepless. When I was informed that I would receive support to build a new house, I was so happy I couldn't sleep. Now, I can rest assured about the days to come,” Mrs. Duc shared.

Mrs. Duc has suffered from a spinal condition for many years, making movement extremely difficult. Currently, she lives with her son, Nguyen Tran The Hao, but he also suffers from a spinal condition and can no longer work to earn a living. The family is gradually falling into poverty; their already old house is becoming even more burdensome in their difficult circumstances. Now, she is somewhat relieved about having a place to live, only worrying about providing food for the family.

Speaking to us with a choked voice, Mr. Hao said: “I used to work as a construction laborer, then as a power grid construction worker. Although the income wasn't stable, I still had some money. Then I fell ill, my wife left, abandoning three young children and my elderly mother. Seeing our dilapidated house, it broke my heart! Now that we have a new house, I feel like I've regained my faith to try my best to provide for my family.”

In the sunken eyes of the man burdened with family responsibilities, I saw a glimmer of warm hope. For someone with a stable income , that house might not be worth much, but for Mr. Hao and his mother, it represented human kindness, the care of the Party, the government, the Fatherland Front of Vinh Thanh Trung commune, and society as a whole. It ensured they wouldn't be left behind, allowing them to welcome the Year of the Horse (2016) in a warmer and more comfortable way.

Nguyen Hoai Phuong, head of Vinh Quoi hamlet, informed: “Ms. Duc's family is considered a disadvantaged family in the hamlet, so they receive regular attention. During the 2026 Tet holiday, we proposed that the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Vinh Thanh Trung commune coordinate with benefactors to build a new house for Ms. Duc. We will also provide additional Tet gifts and other support to help Ms. Duc's family gradually stabilize their lives.”

Motivation for the New Year

Also receiving support for house construction under the 2026 Tet Military-Civilian Program, Mr. Dang Van Nho (74 years old), residing in Khanh My hamlet, My Duc commune, expressed his joy. For him, a decent house is a lifelong dream he has worked hard for but never achieved. Now that his dream has come true, he couldn't be happier. "I've always worked in farming, and my life is precarious. My children are also poor and have left home to seek work elsewhere, so they couldn't help much. The house, built nearly 40 years ago, is dilapidated, and the floor is low, so when it rains, we have to wade through water. With the support from the government, the Fatherland Front of My Duc commune, and the leadership of Khanh My hamlet, I am very happy," Mr. Nho said emotionally.

For the past few days, Mr. Nho has been trying to complete the final stages of his house. He said he will try to find work digging land for hire to earn money to buy some more household items for Tet (Lunar New Year). Because this has been a long-held dream, he and his wife have been so happy they couldn't sleep for several nights.

Visiting Mr. Nho's house with us, Mr. Hua Chon That - Head of Khanh My hamlet - said: "During the 2026 Tet holiday for military and civilians, in addition to Mr. Dang Van Nho's household, Ms. Bui Thanh Tuyen's household in Khanh My hamlet also received support from My Duc commune to build a solidarity house. Throughout 2025 and during the 2026 Tet holiday for military and civilians, the leadership of Khanh My hamlet mobilized resources to build 15 houses for households facing housing difficulties. Each house built brings us more joy, knowing that the people are able to settle down and move towards a more stable life."

As I said goodbye to the families who received their new homes before the Lunar New Year of 2026, I could clearly feel their unwavering faith in their firm handshakes. Difficulties may still lie ahead, but with a decent home, they will have more motivation to strive for a better and more prosperous life in the new year.

Ms. Phan Thi Xuan Mai, Chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Vinh Thanh Trung commune, said: “Participating in the 2026 Tet (Lunar New Year) celebration for the military and civilians, we, along with the commune's associations and organizations, will coordinate with benefactors to build 7 new solidarity houses for disadvantaged households. The commune's Fatherland Front plans to mobilize approximately 1,000 gifts for poor, near-poor, and disadvantaged households throughout the commune to celebrate the 2026 Tet holiday warmly.”
