Man Utd suffers a shock in the Antony transfer saga.

(Dan Tri Newspaper) - Man Utd has just suffered a shock in the transfer market as Real Betis announced their withdrawal from the Antony deal at the last minute, despite the two sides having reached an agreement worth £21.6 million.

Real Betis announced they are unable to afford the financial package agreed upon with Manchester United. Previously, they had agreed to sign the Brazilian striker for £21.6 million, with a clause requiring them to pay Manchester United 50% of the transfer fee if Antony were sold in the future. The Red Devils had allowed the Brazilian player to travel to Spain to negotiate personal terms.

However, complications arose regarding contract termination fees, outstanding wages, and Antony's personal terms. Real Betis insisted the overall cost was too high, forcing them to withdraw.

The Spanish club announced: “No agreement was reached. Real Betis were unable to meet the transfer fee and other payments that Man Utd needed to settle with the player before the deal could be completed.”

Meanwhile, Man Utd believe this may simply be a bargaining tactic from Real Betis. The La Liga club has also left open the possibility of renegotiating, provided the overall fee is reduced.

Antony, who currently has two years remaining on his contract with Man Utd, impressed during a brief loan spell at Betis earlier this year. He made 15 starts in La Liga, scoring 5 goals and providing 2 assists, and was nominated for Player of the Month.

Since his £85 million move to Man Utd, Antony has been considered a disappointing signing. After 96 appearances, he has only scored 12 goals and provided 9 assists. At the national team level, Antony has 16 appearances for Brazil, his most recent inclusion in the squad was in June 2023 but he was not used.

Antony's future remains uncertain. It's possible he could be benched for the entire next season at Man Utd if he doesn't find a way out.
