Manchester United ended 2023 with a 1-2 defeat away to Nottingham Forest in the 20th round of the Premier League. This was their 21st loss of the year. In Manchester United's history, only three times have they lost more matches in a calendar year – 1930 (28 matches), 1972 (25 matches) and 1921 (24 matches).
In the Premier League alone, Erik ten Hag's team lost nine out of their first 20 matches. In the period from the 1989/90 season until the match against Nottingham Forest, Man Utd had never had such a high rate of defeats.

Manchester United are one of the worst attacking teams in the Premier League. In the first 20 rounds, they scored only 22 goals. Only two teams had a worse record: Burnley (20 goals) and Sheffield United (15 goals). These two teams are also at the bottom of the league table.
In the first half of the match against Nottingham Forest, Man Utd only managed one shot on goal. In terms of gameplay, Erik ten Hag's players were unable to dominate the home team, and were even pressured by their opponents during several periods of the match.
Up until the 82nd minute – the moment they conceded the second goal – Man Utd had only managed a mere 3 shots on target. Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest had 2 shots on target and scored 2 goals.
Interestingly, the player who assisted Morgan Gibbs-White's 2-1 lead for Nottingham Forest was Anthony Elanga - a former Manchester United player. This midfielder has a total of 6 assists this season, double the number of assists from the current top assist provider for the "Red Devils".
In the history of the Premier League, Man Utd have only lost to Nottingham Forest twice, and the most recent defeat was in matchday 20 of this season. Their only previous Premier League loss to this opponent was in 1994. At that time, Alf-Inge Haaland was still playing for Nottingham Forest, and his son, Erling Haaland, had not yet been born.
