Kupyansk front on fire, Ukraine calls for help before danger of being surrounded
The fighting in Kupyansk is witnessing an escalation as Russia increases pressure, forcing Kiev to mobilize reserve forces to maintain the fragile defense line.

The battle for Kupyansk is heating up by the hour as Russia steadily increases pressure on the eastern flank of the city. Artillery booms and UAVs continuously hover, creating fierce battles. Under this increasingly intense pressure, the Ukrainian defense forces are forced to call for help from the high command to avoid the risk of the defense line collapsing. According to radio and electronic intelligence sources, numerous distress signals were sent by the Ukrainian side from defense units in Kucherovka, Petropavlivka and Peschane. These units reported heavy losses and no longer had enough troops to maintain a long-term defense.
It is worth noting that there were almost no reserve forces on the ground at this front. They were forced to rely on reinforcements from the regional command, while the mobilization of reinforcements under conditions of Russian controlled firepower was fraught with risks. Military expert Andrey Marochko said that the increasing pressure from Russia has caused the combat readiness of Ukrainian units on this front to decline rapidly. This reflects a growing imbalance in manpower and firepower. Russia is persistently applying the “wear and tear” tactic, combining heavy artillery fire with precision UAV attacks. This tactic not only causes direct casualties to the enemy but also forces Ukraine to exhaust its increasingly scarce reserves, creating a long-term wear and tear situation that makes it difficult for Kiev to maintain resistance.
Meanwhile, the eastern Kupyansk defense line, which Ukraine had built long ago, with many layers of fortifications and fortified firing points, was still considered one of the most solid checkpoints on this front. For many months, despite great efforts, Russia could only gain small tactical advances, unable to create a strategic breakthrough. The fighting in Kupyansk was largely a long-running, attrition-heavy affair, with both sides taking turns attacking and counter-attacking, turning the area into a classic example of positional warfare, where every inch of land was paid for in blood. Observers say that Russia's strong pressure in Kupyansk may have a strategic goal: to stretch Ukrainian forces, forcing Kiev to disperse its resources, thereby reducing its defense capabilities on other fronts such as Donetsk or Kharkov. For Ukraine, the biggest risk is that if the Kupyansk line is breached, Russia could push further northeast, directly threatening vital traffic routes. This would cause difficulties for logistics and supply, which has always been Kiev's weak point.
In this context, the call for reserves reflects internal tensions. Additional troops may help Ukraine hold out, but it also highlights its growing dependence on limited reserves—a factor that is difficult to sustain over the long term in a conflict of attrition. There is no official confirmation of the extent of Russian progress in Kupyansk. Some reports say Russian forces are trying to close in and even enter the city center, but there is no clear evidence that the fighting has crossed the main defense line.
The confrontation in Kupyansk is expected to last for a long time, with a fierce pace no less than other fronts. Although the final outcome is not yet known, the current situation shows that Russia is gradually gaining the upper hand, while Ukraine faces an increasing challenge in maintaining its defense in this strategic area.
