Iran are rated much higher than Syria in this match. The former Asian champions dominated the first half. They opened the scoring in the 32nd minute.
In this situation, a Syrian defender pushed down Porto (Portugal) striker Mehdi Taremi in the 16m50 area, referee Kim Jong Hyeok (Korean) awarded Iran a penalty. From the 11m mark, Mehdi Taremi himself successfully took the penalty, scoring to help Iran lead 1-0.

Iran started the second half better. In the 51st minute, striker of AS Roma (Italy) Sardar Azmoun shot while facing Syrian goalkeeper Ahmad Madania. But Sardar Azmoun's shot hit the goalkeeper.
Immediately after that, Sardar Azmoun had another chance to shoot, but the Iranian striker's shot hit a Syrian defender standing right in front of the goal line.
Then, in the 52nd minute, Sardar Azmoun received a corner kick from his teammate on the right wing and headed the ball from about 10 meters. Once again, goalkeeper Ahmad Madania was helpless, but the Syrian defender had another chance to clear the ball right in front of the goal line.
While charging forward, Iran suddenly left a gap in their defense, before this gap was exploited by the Syrian team.

In the 59th minute, Iran goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand illegally tackled Syria striker Pablo Sabbag in the penalty area, and Korean referee Kim Jong Hyeok awarded Syria a penalty. Omar Khribin's accurate shot equalized 1-1 for the team of famous coach Hector Cuper.
By the 90th minute, Iran was down to 10 men, as striker Mehdi Taremi received a second yellow card (which is equivalent to a red card) for pulling down Alaa Al Dali during a Syrian counter-attack.
Taking advantage of the extra player, Syria pressed the field in the 10 minutes of injury time of the second half and two extra periods, but failed to score.
The 1-1 draw forced the two sides to decide the winner in a penalty shootout. In this shootout, Iran won 5-3, thereby gaining the right to meet the number one candidate for the championship, Japan, in the quarterfinals.
