Mbappe shines. |
Entering the match in Wrocław, coach Didier Deschamps and his team clearly showed their determination to dominate the game. In the 10th minute, "Les Bleus" opened the scoring after a smooth coordination. Bradley Barcola broke down the right wing before passing back to Michael Olise. The Bayern player made no mistake to score the third goal for the national team.
France continued to dominate for most of the first half. The likes of Olise, Desire Doue and captain Kylian Mbappe all had chances to double the lead, but Ukraine goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin played brilliantly, repeatedly denying dangerous shots. Thanks to that, Ukraine held on and entered the break with only one goal conceded.
Deschamps brought on Ousmane Dembele in the second half to add to his attacking threat. The PSG forward quickly made his mark, but his close-range effort was again brilliantly saved by Trubin. Ukraine, who were on the back foot, had a late chance to equalise when Ivan Kalyuzhnyi fired wide and Illia Zabarnyi missed a close-range header.
Escaping a dangerous situation, France sealed the match in the 82nd minute. From a long pass from Aurelien Tchouameni, Mbappe accelerated past the home team's defense, before unleashing a technical shot that defeated Trubin, sealing a 2-0 victory.
Mbappe scored his 51st goal for France, equalling Thierry Henry's record and just six short of Olivier Giroud's. The reigning world runners-up also extended their impressive run with just one defeat in their last 22 qualifiers (W15 D6).
