Lionel Messi has responded to Cristiano Ronaldo's controversial comments that winning the World Cup "is not that important" and "does not define his legacy" in football.

Ronaldo and Messi have opposite views on the World Cup.

According to Messi, for any player, lifting the World Cup is the pinnacle of glory that a career can reach. Speaking at the America Business Forum in Florida, the Inter Miami star said: "The feeling of winning the World Cup is hard to describe. For me, it is not only a title for myself, but also a source of pride for my teammates, my family and my country. After so many years of waiting, the people of Argentina have lived their dream."

Messi called the 2022 World Cup championship the final piece to close his legendary career: "For a player, the World Cup is the ultimate achievement. After that, there is nothing more to dream about. I was lucky to have won all the titles at club and individual level, and then won the Copa America with the Argentina team. The World Cup is the most complete gift, like closing my journey."

Previously, in an interview with journalist Piers Morgan, Ronaldo affirmed: "If you ask me if I dream of winning the World Cup? No. A tournament has only 6-7 matches so it cannot define who is the greatest player in history."

Ronaldo still has a chance as Portugal is aiming for the 2026 World Cup. Meanwhile, Messi and Argentina are ready to defend their title, with the goal of becoming the first team since Brazil (1958-1962) to win the world championship twice in a row.
