Lionel Messi failed to score in his 60 minutes on the pitch during Inter Miami's friendly match, which ended in a 1-1 draw against his childhood club, Newell's Old Boys.
Goals: Borgelin 64' - Diaz 83'.
This was Messi's first start since the defeat against Al Hilal on January 30th, although the 37-year-old superstar didn't seem to have regained his best fitness. His best chance came in the 31st minute. Receiving the ball in midfield, Messi dribbled past a Newell's midfielder before curling into the penalty area and narrowly missing the far post. If the ball had gone in, it would have been a spectacular goal.

Six minutes later, Messi came close to scoring a masterpiece in a different way, this time from a free kick from a central position, about 25 meters away. He curled the ball over the wall towards the near post, but it still went wide. In the stands, many people simultaneously clutched their heads in disappointment.
Messi only played 60 minutes in this match, alongside former Barca teammates like Jordi Alba and Luis Suarez. The Miami captain had three shots, none of which were on target. Additionally, at one point he took a corner kick, sending the ball directly towards the goal, but goalkeeper Lucas Hoyos easily caught it.
Before Messi left the pitch, a small spectator ran towards him, too fast for security personnel to keep up. However, the superstar's bodyguards rushed out and apprehended the spectator, preventing him from approaching Messi. Meanwhile, the Argentinian captain received applause from both the Miami crowd and Newell's Old Boy.

Four minutes after Messi and Suarez were substituted, the home side opened the scoring thanks to 1.93m tall striker Shanyder Borgelin. However, Miami failed to win their final friendly match, as midfielder Franco Diaz equalized for the visitors, securing a 1-1 draw.
Six days from now, Inter Miami will play their first MLS 2024 match against Real Salt Lake. Last season, Miami finished 14th in the Eastern Conference, while Salt Lake finished fifth in the Western Conference.
Messi played for Newell's from the age of eight until he was 13. The Argentinian club is currently second in Group B of the national championship. He has said he wants to return to play for Newell's someday.
