Even as it reportedly slows its hiring pace, Meta has added an AI executive, according to Bloomberg . Frank Chu, who previously led Apple’s artificial intelligence teams focused on cloud infrastructure, training, and search, will join the social networking company.

Frank Chu manages the operations of large language models and oversees part of the software training process. He is also involved in the search engine development efforts for the Siri voice assistant and entertainment services.

Chu is one of at least six Apple employees who have left the company for Meta, including the head of its AI modeling team. The wave began in July, when Ruoming Pang, the founder of Apple’s artificial intelligence group, left for a $200 million package from Meta. Since then, several AI engineers have followed suit, including Tom Gunter, Mark Lee, Bowen Zhang, and Yun Zhu.

Along with Pang, Chu is considered the most important of the departures, based on his scope of responsibility and position at his former company. He was known as the “right-hand man” of Benoit Dupin, Apple’s director of AI infrastructure. Dupin reports directly to John Giannandrea, the company’s director of AI strategy.

At Meta, Chu will work in a new group called MSL Infra, which focuses on AI infrastructure. Earlier this week, Meta reorganized its AI division into four teams, all under the supervision of Alexandr Wang, former head of Scale AI.

Chu's acquisition comes as Meta has spent billions of dollars building out its Superintelligence group.

“In order to manage responsibly and ensure current and future roles are available, we are temporarily pausing hiring across all MSL teams, with the exception of those who are business-critical,” the company said in a note to hiring managers this week.

The new strategy allows management to be cautious about hiring in 2026 as it continues to expand. “Alex’s HR will evaluate key hires on a case-by-case basis,” the memo reads. However, Wang said in a social media post on August 21 that the company is “investing more and more in the Meta Superintelligence lab.”

Meanwhile, the exodus is further disrupting Apple’s already troubled AI efforts. The company has struggled to catch up with rivals and has delayed a major update to Siri. Following a high-profile shakeup, Apple is considering using third-party AI models for its Siri voice assistant, rather than its own technology.
