According to Reuters, a small group of users in the US and Japan will see ads appear between posts on the Threads homepage. Instagram and Threads CEO Adam Mosseri said the company will closely monitor this test before rolling it out more widely. In addition, businesses can expand existing advertising campaigns on Instagram and Facebook to Threads.

Meta is also testing an AI-powered ad filter on Threads, designed to help businesses increase ad performance, ensuring brand posts don't appear next to sensitive content.
In early January, Meta adjusted its US moderation program on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. Emarketer analyst Jasmine Enberg said that adding ads to Threads just weeks after Meta changed its policy may make businesses more cautious. However, the troubles surrounding TikTok are pushing businesses to look for alternative platforms.
Meta has a huge advantage with three platforms that have more than 3 billion users worldwide. While Meta has long intended to bring ads to Threads, the company has held off to focus on attracting more users.
Since its launch in July 2023, Threads has always been considered a copy and competitor of the X platform. Billionaire Elon Musk once threatened to sue Meta because he thought the Threads application violated Twitter's intellectual property rights.
Twitter's highest revenue ever was $5.1 billion in 2021, before it was sold to Elon Musk. Meanwhile, Meta's global revenue in 2024 was up to $163 billion. According to Bloombergs, Threads is only a small part of Meta's business. In October 2024, Meta CFO Susan Li said the company was pleased with Threads' growth trajectory but did not expect the app to contribute much to revenue in 2025.
